When I started in Canada in 2002, I got $ 17K a year. Now this was my professional job. When I left in 2011, I was earning around $ 40,000 a year (with 8 years Canadian experience).

$ 45K and all is only for specific people, who have done hard core engineering in the Gulf and have solid experience. Otherwise, you are looking only at $ 30,000 per annum to start with. Of course, being a labourer (like a shift worker in pharma or in some heavy engineering workshop) will pay you more, more through OT. I know a Msc. Micro biologist who works in Pahrma field who started with 25K and now is in 60K (with massive OT).

TK – I believe you never think out of the box. Even being a qualified architect, you were only earing 40K after living 8 years in this country. Let me tell you how people smell the opportunity to grow and earn more instead of staying on freebies. Last weekend, one of my friends introduced me to his friend who was a mechanical engineer from India. He came here 3 years back, researched the domain where he was interested to work and decided to go for P. Eng designation. While working towards P. Engg., he met another guy who is a Canadian architect and doing small drawing projects like in plaza, if someone wants to add a washroom to the store or if someone needs an entrance to the basement to his house. City needs drawing for the proposed changes to the structure. The architect charges over 1k for the drawings and owner has to pay for the city permit. This guy, without having any architect qualifications, started the same work after contacting few desi handymans/petty contractors who do the basement finish work. He started charging 1K including the permit cost of the city (which I believe is under $200) and also provides liaising between the owner and city inspector. In Brampton, lots of home owners are too busy or not comfortable in English communications so they feel better if someone else will take care of all city related matters. Everyone knows how the Brampton is expending north, east and west and most of the people want to finish the basement preferably with separate entrance. This guy jumped into this work around 2 years ago and now, he is doing 10 to 12 assignments per week. All he has to do is to pay one visit to the house, take the measurements and prepare the drawing of the additional structure based upon the City Building codes. There is a handbook available for the Building codes of the province. He is using Auto CAD, which he learned during his Mechanical Engineering. He keeps 2 phones – one for the general use and one exclusively for City officials because the City inspectors call him to visit the house and he has to inform the house owner/contractor. He actually works as an interface between City and Home owner/contractor. Now come to the real shocker for you. Can you imagine how much he is making? He is making over 8K per week without having any architecture qualification. He drives BMW SUV. He prefers cash so most of his income is cash income. Now TK, think about it, think big and think out of the box. Try to smell the possibilities from unusual channels because the usual channels are flooded with people like you and due to throat cut competition, there is no more money in them.

Your point well taken.
I did get some of those business oppertunities when I was in Canada but I decided against it. I was sort of an office man. working from 9am to 7 pm, Monday to Sunday, working , on CD and investing in Canadian shares (which all flopped- esp. the mineral ventures).

Some of these business oppertuinties are dangerous. If you forget something and design outside the code (for example, the width of any staircase in Ontario should be atleast 3'-0" wide. If you design it for 2'-10", and someone falls, you can get sued. The building construction industry is dominated by italians and protugese and they will not let you come near it (say buying land and doing sub divisions). In the case of renovations, a lot of chinese, sri lankans are already on the rise and it is difficult to identify a niche market.

All my ideas were open to all and I used to frequently say it in CD. Let me repeat it again.

1. Get used furniture for free, clean it and sell it on Kijiji.
2. Give free coffee and get Canadian customers.
3. Be a mover on the weekends.
4. Try use your car as taxi on weekends. etc...

When I came to Canada in 2002, I stayed with a north indian whom i found on the matrimonial website. He was a mechanical engineer who did his PG in Sask and was working as a manager in Magna. He tool me to a sweet shop in brampton and told me that the owner of this sweet shop does not even know proper english and yet me drives a merc. and I drive a Honda.

Come on dude, why would you even think like that. Why would you serve white people. :( Unfortunately it's not that only you think like that, have seen many other desis with same thoughts. Trust me people of any race is no better than other race.

TK – I still believe that you are not getting my point. That guy never prepares the drawings as a professional architect – he prepares on behalf of the owner. Once the drawings are submitted to the City, the City Inspector has to examine the proposed drawings, validates that these are per building codes, has to make any change, if required and finally approve it. Now the City Inspector is approving it so the liability lies with the City or with the Owner, on whose behalf those drawings were submitted.

On your Italians/portugese/Chinese/Sri Lankans comments, I still believe there are tons of Desi handyman/contractors working basement finish/renovation work in Brampton/Mississauga area.

I think I am expecting too much from you. Consider this post as a final post and you may continue with your freebies ideas. For others, don’t restrict yourself with traditional avenues. Keep your eyes and ears open. Possibilities may be hidden – you have to keep on looking from different perspective.

Lost of interest in marital life is very common at this point of life . Have you tried different methods to attract back your husband to lead normal married life . Beauty parlous are a good source to start with . I also heard a lot about rejuna on radio . See if it helps .
Also don't make men work for 70 hours in exchange of money and greed . If he is exhausted he can't perform any other duties which let women to look for different alternatives of entertainment ( CD is one of them )
Does any of it makes sense !!! You decide

U really are expecting too much from TK.:) Have you ever seen Govt officials who eat beetle leaf (Paan) or cigrette and talking big and totally corrupt who never work productively and charge overtime to the company etc?? Majority of the men in India are like that in office and that is why organisations prefer female staff coz they are sincere and complete all the work in time. :(

How do you know that we are writing when we have work ??

Perhaps we do not have work at the time we check on CD ... perhaps we work late also when needed ...

But how would you know that ... you are comfortably keying it from home when perhaps you could also be doing something better ( as per your own words )

Try finding a job here first before commenting on others !!!

So I guess its flipped back to you ... Practice what you preach !!
