I agree substantially with DtC’s post (I hope he was not referring to me with his ‘over optimistic’ comment). In fact, my first post on this thread, was essentially to refute over the top comments in the original post, rather than to paint an 'over-optimistic' or rosy picture.

In terms of the job market, there is nothing to suggest that there are ‘NO jobs’ or that the economy is a mess. There have however, certainly been problems with recognition of foreign qualifications by Canadian employers. Professionals in regulated professionals could have it either better or worse – those who do their homework, get the support of the licensing body and adapt, CAN (I didn’t say always) make a quick and painless transition into their professions in Canada. Once there, Canada does offer a extremely high quality of life. For every few that do make it though, there are many that do not.

That said and done, many of the comments being made on this board would make it appear that ALL immigrants here are living terrible lives, perhaps, with nowhere better to go to. Fact is, ‘many’ (not all) immigrants do well and have options, but choose to live in Canada for the quality of life that it offers.

Vinod – I wonder, how different are the winters in Albany, NY from those in Toronto?

So essentially then, it is a good place if you are in your mid to late 20s, ....

That is something that can't be stressed enough. A large part of achieving success is defined by comparing what you left behind and what you gained after the transition.

The older you are when immigrating to Canada, or anywhere else for that matter really, the less bright the outlook.

Canuck3000's post led me to believe I was going to a place worse than a third-world country.

That is not true at all. The country has all the features of a first world country. It is only in the area of employment that the scene is not encouraging.

Taxes do hurt, but that is a universal fact anywhere. Taxes in the US are less. So what? Do people there not grumble about taxes? Even if taxes were to be reduced, people would still gripe.

It is true that healthcare needs more money, but it is still free and that makes a lot of difference. Please remember, a country is not only for those who are well off.

Maybe I am missing something, but I do not understand why people make such a big fuss over the difficulty of getting family doctors! In fact I do not even understand this concept of "family doctor" at all! But that's another discussion perhaps. Coming back to the point, there are walk-in clinics all over the place. It is not as if you have no doctor to go to if you do not have a family doctor!

And no it is not true that people have died in waiting queues! That allegation needs to be supported with a cite.

The strong 4 pillars of Canadian economy are Oil, Forestry, Mining and Farming. Manufacturing and IT has lots of competition from Third World countries.

To have a good career in Canada you have to be from these four sectors. But for that you have to go Rural as Toronto and Vancouver do not have much of these Big 4 sectors which form the base of the Canadian economy.

ARTICLE: http://www.readersdigest.ca/debate.html?a=v&di=176

In that article it states:

- In Canada the average wait for procedures such as neurosurgery is more than four months;

- for cancer radiation treatment, over two months.

- average wait for treatment after consulting a specialist for coronary bypass clocks in at up to 52 weeks

- One reason the American system is much faster than Canada’s is that there is greater access to facilities for diagnosis and treatment.

Many more such articles exist, visit:

I still do not where it says someone has "died" waiting for treatment.

What you have quoted only says that the system is stretched and needs improvement.

Procedures like neurosurgery and coronary by pass can quite often be delayed depending on the patient's condition. The general public has the mistaken notion that any and every case diagnosed as requiring those procedures are by default an emergency.

That is not actually correct. Not all patients prescribed those procedures and necessarily "critical". There are many that can wait under careful monitoring. But if someone is found to be needing those procedures immediately because it is life threatening otherwise, they are carried out rightaway as an emergency. True, everyone would "like" to have his by-pass or whatever done asap, but resources anywhere are limited and have to allocated carefully.
