Two years ago, I used to work for a foam fabricating company. They had a very clear policy- though purely based on generalisations- they chose African for physically demanding work like 'closing a mattres' (it is a technical terms when you use a sewing machine to stitch the sides of a mattress, which requires physical strength) and for loading the same in trucks, for other manual work they used Asian men, for lighter manual work or drawings, they used females, for selling in local market they used 'whites'. And I personally think that such a policy worked better than any other, simply because GOD has made us all different with different weakness and different strengths. ?

I respectfully disagree, I see this flawed on SO many levels...as touched on in my last post. It sort of reminds me of the aryan 'master race' propoganda of the Nazi's and the caste system in India.

I agree, but the difference is at an individual level, not at a racial level in terms of internal attributes(versus external...e.g: 36d bras :D )

So WHY NOT USE GENERALISATIONS for running day to day business, but make exceptions when needed or opportunity arises itself

Call me Daft, but I'm thankfull we do not live in such a society. Who decides who is an exception and who gives a right to another person to figure out when or how someone is an exception?
You guys cry racism at the drop of a hat, when the system itself does NOT legally condone it. Now imagine if, like you say, such attitudes were legitimised and part of daily life. Can you imagine how much time a new immigrant would take to find a job incase he did not fit into one of those predefined moulds. He would have to walk the extra mile just to convince the employer that he is 'an exception'.

Many people on this board have not been able to convince an employer to give them a chance, add state/society sanctioned generalisation-based hiring practices...and things will almost surely get worse.

Anyway, I'm surprised to hear this coming from you since you have had international exposure.

Ofcourse, theres always the chance that I'm wrong. However, the futility of engaging in such debates this day and age is getting to me.

Jake,

a little off topic,

Sports in North America is a classic example of what chandresh mentioned.

Of course at one time blacks were totally barred from the major pro sports.

But once the door opened, they proved themselves as better.

But who knows it might change again, although to be fair I dont see asians in american football or basketball....maybe the whites will make a comeback once they figure out what it takes to compete with the blacks.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

it just takes time. With asians...its also the expectations of previous generations. e.g: my parents wanted me to be a doc or engineer...infact they used to complain until a cpl yrs ago :)

for many of the blacks its the way to get out of adverse economic situations... that probably gives them the intensity and edge.

Talk about making a comeback.........Steve Nash (a Canadian from BC...and white, was MVP in the NBA this year).

Stereotypes and generalizations just don't work..........that's actually something thats held India back in the past.

So..everybody has to go thru the Canadian Phase.

not true. Looking back at myself...i see what the problem was...it was mostly me. I came at a time when internet was just making inroads into india and even here 14.4(??)kb modems were the rage. My first new machine here was a top-of the line 133mhz machine :). Atleast now immigrants have a chnce to prepare themselves before they land.

That has made you humble and understanding of situation.

Probably, but I still think the mostly negative viewpoints do more harm to the people writing them. There are just too many ways(cultural difference, racism, etc etc) to deflect responsibility. I see it as a sort of escapism. Luckily for me, there was no CD around then and I put the blame where I felt it belonged...my own shoulders. After I did that, the only way out was to work at improving myself.

I am glad for the lessons I had to learn...even though I did not like them at the time.

I think it is generalisations which work more than specialisations. Look at the work force in Canada - it can be generally said that the higher up positions are generally held by the 'whites' than the coloured ones. I would not like to go into to percentages since I do not want to be snipped at - but would you not agree that the proportion of higher positions held by whites as compared to coloured is much much higher than the proportion of populations of whites to that of coloured?

Is is not generally found that NBA has more blacks than whites - way out of proportion of the population of whites to blacks?

Is is not generally found that most whites do not know more than two languages/dialects but most Asians know more than two?

Is it not generally found (and generally accepted) that whites are more vocal in expressing 'thank you's', 'sorry's' and 'awesome' than Asians? And therefore Generally, local organisations like to deal more with whites than coloured because of their 'soft skills' as advocated by you and others. Isn't it the same reason that when I am applying for a job, I am considered an Indian first without giving me a chance to present and surprise them with my manners, English and 'soft skills'?

Is it not generally found that Africans are more physically strong and taller than people from other parts of the world?

Is it not generally found that a Gujrati conceived and born in Africa is not as physically strong and well build as a 'black' in Africa? Isn't that something to do with race?

Isn't is generally recognised that Italians are best at construction, furniture and shoe manufacturing - that must have something to do with the race because even in Canada, they are bigshots in construction and furniture industry (though many of them are born and brought up here)? Isn't it due to this reason the general public is willing to generally pay a higher price for Italian furniture than furniture from other parts of the world?

Isn't it generally expressed that CD is full of negativitism and so people who are successful and positive (generally) stay away or leave sooner than others? The specialists have not been able to overcome the generalists in changing the attitude of the forum.

Isn't it generally known that young immigrants to Canada are more successful than not so young (though qualified and experienced) immigrants? Which in turn means that the world in general is ready and more accepting of younger immigrants?

Which in turn means that businesses do run on principals which apply generally to human beings?
