Some companies have unpaid lunch of one hour, so you are in office for 9 hours but you work only 8 hours. Not sure about 9-1/2.

2 Secondly - what is a native sense of humor ? can you explain?

3 Snow may be free.......but water isnt, at least in BC:)

1. Why not? Are we not in Canada? where people work very hard and immigrants are cheated by the govt. (though they are ready to work as hard as the natives- by that I mean native born, educated, local people).
My office hours are 7:30 am to 5:30 pm (M-F). We also have to work cumpulsorily on saturday (mostly 1/2 day). 1/2 hour is included in that as lunch break (un paid)
Salaried people are not given any overtime pay. Hourly paid people are paid 1.5 times overtime after 44 hrs. (as per govt. regulation). I complained to the HR and this is what I got as a reply
Eating Periods and Breaks
Employers are required to provide eating periods to employees, but they are not required to provide other types of breaks.
Eating Periods
An employee must not work for more than five hours in a row without getting a 30-minute eating period (meal break) free from work. However, if the employer and employee agree, the eating period can be split into two eating periods within every five consecutive hours. Together these must total at least 30 minutes. This agreement can be oral or in writing.
Meal breaks are unpaid unless the employee's employment contract requires payment. Even if the employer pays for meal breaks, the employee must be free from work in order for the time to be considered a meal break.
Meal breaks, whether paid or unpaid, are not considered hours of work, and are not counted toward overtime.
Coffee Breaks and Breaks Other Than Eating Periods
Employers are required to provide employees with eating periods as described above. Employers do not have to give employees “coffee” breaks or any other kind of break.
Employees who are required to remain at the workplace during a coffee break or breaks other than eating periods must be paid at least the minimum wage for that time. If an employee is free to leave the workplace, the employer does not have to pay for the time.
I hope this answers your questions and feel free to call me with any other questions you may have.

2. Natives born, brought up and educated here have a werid sense of humour, jokes, way of talking etc.. and it does not gel at all with an educated and professional desi. Unless you are in the company of a desi, you feel discriminated against.

3. We have a lake (lake ontario) on our town's border. We can drink as much water from there as we like and it is very clean. Also all washrooms in Canada provide clean drinking water (whether at IKEA or at Tim Hortons) and for free- so unlike in India

Hope this helps

Peace by TK

Ever tried listening to music while working or while driving? Works for me unless the singer is Himesh or Rafi :D :p

But seriously speaking, taking regular breaks while work, music and computer games or posting messages on CD are best stress relievers for me.
