Hello,

One of my friend has an offer from a good co. for outside sales position, good salary etc but only thing holding him back is driving required, everyday his job will be to be on road and visit all the stores in GTA being an immigrant, to me driving seems challenging. what do other experienced people suggest, can we be as comfortable driving ? Hes knows driving and does drive but to be on highway most of your day and all the days...isn't that riskier ?

GTA highways are getting dangerous everyday. I was reading other day that Driving Instructors are carrying more demerit points in compare to other drivers. Its not just car but even big rig drivers are getting wild. Include Tow Truck & recently Snowplow accident. Study have shown that people die more on Road than on Air.

But if I were him, I would have jumped on that Opportunity. There is risk but if it has to happen, it will happen. One of my friends did this and was always on Road. He used to give himself good extra time - everytime.

Aashu,
your friend should weigh the pro's and Con's of the offer.
What he has to consider is (con's) :
1. wear and tear for the vehicle + gas charges
2. You get more tired while driving than if sitting
3. WHat happens on snow days
4. IS there any target to be acheived?
5. IS it flexible timings?
6. What happens if you are stuck up in traffic during peak hours. Is it free time then or will it be included in your working hours

Pro's would be :
1. Can listen to songs /watch scenery while driving.
2. Can do personal work during office hours.
3. Can pick/drop child at school/daycare and can even take the child with him

Let him compare both his present salary with the proposed one and let him come to a compromise based on the comparison.
Hope this helps.

Maharaj and TK,

thanks for the responses, but dilemma still prevails....we did consider pros and cons....

but only thing we are stuck on is : is the increase in salary worth the risk taking of life ? yes, we know it can happen around the corner of the hse, or may not happen ever....and people do take all kinds of risks but this is life risk....if ever...so the confusion...

and of course not to mention, many many people do the outside sales job...but as we are new to the country and comparitively new to raods and being first outside sales job for us in canada....so the concern....

1. wear and tear for the vehicle + gas charges : co. pays
2. You get more tired while driving than if sitting: true
3. WHat happens on snow days : one has to manage
4. IS there any target to be acheived? : 70 stores to be covered on a monthly basis
5. IS it flexible timings? : yes.
6. What happens if you are stuck up in traffic during peak hours. Is it free time then or will it be included in your working hours : free time...

Pro's would be :
1. Can listen to songs /watch scenery while driving. : :p
2. Can do personal work during office hours. I dont think after covering 70 stores u wud have any time
3. Can pick/drop child at school/daycare and can even take the child with him : cant take the child :), but yes drop.

Let him compare both his present salary with the proposed one and let him come to a compromise based on the comparison.

well how can one compromise, it is a yes or a no....

I would not worry about Pros & Cons listed by TK. Only thing that is stopping you is, I think, is Risk. I understand that fully. This is what I am thinking while accepting the job.

1. I'll go ahead and Lease Safe & Comfortable New Car. Make it as Safe as possible.
2. I am New to Country, I am in Sales ... and to break into good Sales position in this country is difficult (I am not talking about Retail).
3. I'll move to Inside Sales in 2 years ... 2 yrs should be sufficient enough to get myself updated and to give me "Canadian Experience"
4. Everytime I am stepping in car ... I anyways embrace the Danger. Be it a Pleasure drive or everyday Office Commute. Yes, risk is more but I guess its just the personality.

Top it up with -
5. Move right next to Office - so that I save that much driving.

Besides all that I love to Drive ...

If I had got such an offer when I was in Canada, I would have jumped and grabbed the offer.

Ofcourse, one should consider whether one has the aptitude for outside sales and whether he likes meeting people, etc. Once you get the experience and prove yourself, you are likely to get into a managerial role and then the driving gets less.

Risk is there even sitting in the office or sitting at home. What if there is a fire, etc.?

Rgds.

Rajan.
