Racism hinders immigrants' job prospects: study
TORONTO - A study by the Canadian Council of Social Development blames racism for new immigrants not doing as well as they have in the past, particularly when it comes to jobs.
It says recent arrivals earn less than the Canadian-born population and fewer new arrivals are either working or looking for a job.
The federally funded study also cites a failure to recognize education and skills among immigrants. It says the point system selects immigrants who are highly educated, therefore their lower earnings can't be explained by inferior levels of formal education.
At least three out of four recent immigrants are members of visible minorities; that's double the proportion that it was in the mid 1980s.
More immigrants come to Toronto and Ontario than to any other region of Canada.

Hi biomed,
Sorry I have to tell you if you think canada is racist you are quite mistaken. I have lived in UK and people there are rascist. You walk doen the street and racist people shout out "heh you pakis', indians get into fight etc etc. Canada is such a pleasing country away from rasicm, i belive and I think about immigrants not getting good chances in jos well I am indian, I have a very good job quite high up in my company also know lots of other indians as CEO's,COO you name it they are there. What I find that hinders immigrants from getting jobs is there attitudes.(not every one before I get my head bitten off) I interview a lot of people and most times when I interview some people from India or whereevr you ask them questions on there personalitys or what there intrest are and they do not have much to say. They are very very educated and technical and probably brilliant in there job but in most comapnies in Canada you need a personality to be able to be a good team member and I find that is one lacking thing they also answer everything techie and never show there personality. lack of commnication. I employ a lot of people and I am not rasict but I am telling you what I see .
Secondly you are quick to say Canadain's are rasict but heh indian people are the most rasict people at times. Indian people only employ indians. if your kids have different race friends I hear a lot of people complian. They judge people without knowing them. Families hate each other always gossping and never happy. Eg I have seen people who have done well for themselves and instead of being happy for them behind there backs people talk. I am not saying all indian people but I would a fair amount. I experinced that in Mississagua quite a few times. Also being different castes in Canada heh people never stop, I am a jat so I am superior or heh you are a so and so etc. So stop complaing that Canada is racist it is what you make of it and as for job discrimination maybe people need to look at the whole picture. You may have tons of degrees etc but there is more to a job than qualificatiuons. ANd you wanna see rasicm move to UK
Definitely UK is the most racist country in the world. We all know what they did in India. They separated the races with their 'divide and rule'
Also may i add what ever habit for eg. like gossiping, etc was all left back by the British. We picked it up from there.
Why move from one racist country to another.
It is like jumping from a frying pan into a fire. No way and thanks for reminding us how we Indians are. It is just our personality. Do you see that in the second generations Indians?
Hi,
See what in the 2nd generation Indians ?

I haven't read all the lengthy posts in this thread, but just reading the last few threads I have this to say:
Of course there is racism in Canada. There is racism in each and every country to a certain degree. I personally feel that, that degree is very low in canada and there is hardly any racism. The press in North America tend to highlight even the smallest pieces of news here, so even what would be a minor racism event in some other country becomes a high blown scandal here. It goes for all other news .. SARS was so overblown here. When in India do you hear IN THE NEWS, that someone was denied a job because he belongs to a certain caste, or was too dark for the job?
I think racism is very little here, of course much less than in India (I have seen how Indians treat blacks in India). Most of the people who say they face Racism generally say this because they feel jobs they derserved went to white people. More than often they really don't the facts e.g.
- Maybe the white guy is a citizen. By law citizens get a priority to jobs.
- Maybe the white guy is an immigrant too, a russian, a yugoslavian etc.
- Maybe the white guy has a degree from a canadian university (why would I hire someone from some country whose univeristy I have never heard of rather than hire someone who has studied here?)
- Maybe the white guy has more experience.
- Maybe the white guy has more canadian experience (why would I hire an architect from India, when there are so many with Canadian experience looking for the same job?).
- Maybe the white guy is more talented (shocking isnt it?)
- Maybe the white guy has a better personality (of my god .. outrageous!!)
- Maybe the white guy is not a white guy and you simply assumed the guy was white.
- Maybe the white guy is the nephew of the hiring manager .. but hey what's new here? Indian managers hire relatives all the time .. TIT for TAT. When Indians hire Indians we call that supporting the community, when Whites hire whites we call it racism!!?
The fact is jobs are ***few***, the economy is just getting back, so to get a job you have to fight hard and its easy to blame it on racism, but more than often its just that you didnt get the job because someone else was a better candidate and thats that.

.also those who easily blame their failures on racism miss out big time in improving themselves and becoming more competitive.
it is easy to blame others for our failures.
lets start taking responsibility for failures just as we do for successes....and not just blame it on excuses like racism
