The problem with S. Ramesh was his attitude. That irked the then coach John Wright. Nothing else. Was a good test opener. I believe he is not anymore in the TN team.

P. Patel got into the team becuase of Gaekwad and to some extent Kiran More. Note that P. Patel cost India the test and the series against Aussies in their backyard. If I am right, he had never played in the Ranji matches.

These things do happen in India. Dravid is still there, whether he scores or not, as he is a "senior" player. Sending him at 4 instead of Robin Utthappa was a mistake. Hope Dhoni learns from this.

Interesting points you have made .... so you want to say that the problem with Indian cricket is that we dont have many players from smaller centers. I always thought performance was required to be in Indian team, so since that criteria is not working we can very well get players from " Joomri talaya " , after all you never know what clicks.
However there are some inacuracies in you premise.
1) Parthiv patel used to play for Gujrat and not Baroda before he was picked for Indian criclet team. Infact he never played a Ranji match before he was selected for India. It was on his performace in the U-19 world cup & playing for India-A he was selected.
2) Kiran More became the Chairman of selection committe in September 2004 and in October 2004 Parthiv Patel played his last test. So much for Kiran More's help.Incidently he was replaced by Dhoni with Kiran More being the Chairman of the selection committe.
3) Small town players have been playing for Indian team for a long time. Kapil Dev was from Haryana when he joined the Indian tema. Infact he said he had never watched a five day international match before he palyed one against Pakistan.
4) Presently in the 15 man squad we have 3 players from Mumbai & Delhi (Gautam Gambir is out with an injury for the time being).
Cheers

December in Australia will be Fun for Outsiders. :)

Shouldn't it be the monkeys screaming racial discrimination :D
The Aussies have had their share of crowd behaviour http://content-www.cricinfo.com/australia/content/story/234961.html (at least no one got punched, but then they dont allow beer inside cricketing venues in India ... at least not offically)
