The median salary in Canada is about $45k per family and most of the Canadians live OK in that except for us Indians who have been only GMs and MDs back home. They have now come to Canada and do nothing except show off and criticize.
If you spend wisely and live like a normal family devoid of show off $45k salary is quite decent. If you have further problems understanding the budget then do call me or send a PM. Do your own research and you will find that Canada is really one of the best places to live in the world.

This is a very subjective topic. Depends on how you want to live your life and what kind of lifestyle you want to maintain.
As Chandresh said, what if you don't like to shop for your groceries in the stores you named. What if you don't like to buy your clothes from Walmart. What if you like dining out a few times a week. What if you like movies and like to go out atleast once a week. What if you enjoy a nice blend of scotch and soda every Friday with your friends at a nice bar. What if you don't want to send your kids to a public school. What if prefer to drive a G35 instead of a Honda Civic or a Corolla.
Nothing I mentioned above can vaguely be called an 'extravagant' way of living.
I'm a single person living all by myself, and boy I'll have nightmares if I ever have to think of surviving in 45K a year.

Sometimes, it is a good thing to have nightmares...and boy I can think of some real bad nightmares which many people have, even worse than surviving on 45K a year.

I donot know why people have started picking on "IknowNothing".
I, for one, find his posts / ideas very useful and not too different from other members posting in this forum.
Again, I have seen in the other thread started by "Meghal" that people are picking on him for no reason at all.
He is just expressing his point of view and there are only 3 points of views :
1. Agree
2. Disagree
3. Hijacking / posting personal attackes / leading the thread to know where.
I belive that we have to target only people falling under point 3 and not those falling under point i and 2.
