Canada has more Bhikaris than India. I have no doubt about it. Immigrants who are not successful in India or earning very low are happy in Canada, whereas people earning handsomely in India get pissed off in Canada and mostly return after the experiment. So majority of the people living in Canada count pennies and think about petty purchases and small budgets to make ends meet. I never bothered about my living costs in India which were in dollar terms more than $3000 a month but could make more money (with pride and authority) in India without working like a slog. In Canada you can never ever reach such a position for next few generations. The economy is highly subsidized and over taxed. Education quality till Secondary school is worst than India's, and it becomes unaffordable for most of people to send their kids to college. Students work hard to make ends meet, generate points and try to get scholarships but the system is such that 95% never make it and end up as general labour. This is a "zabardasti ki country" and thatswhy the reason its accepting immigrants and now even more easily. Now even students can work and even a chai-maker can immigrate. Till 1984 this country had respect and pride and all those rosy things for which the Sardars ran selling everything into Canada. However after thaT the country took a declining trend in terms of everything, and today if you tell anyone that you are Canadian, people start pitying you. Indians have become the synonym of wholesole taxi drivers, roof repairers and carpenters. The government has providied lot of help centers for immigrants but the society in general makes them all useless. I think the coming recession will eventually show the real face of this system when local people will get competition from new immigrants in all trades and aspects resulting into tensions. I earn from outside Canada and only live in Canada becuase of good weather and cleanliness. But I really feel sorry for the people who come selling ff their assets and limited money hoping miracles.

Are you kidding?
You are talking in the 200K range for all that....
Less than 1% of the population are in that range, I expect.

Sometime I had combine my business travel with pleasuer to save ion tickets etc. I think determination what is important and learning how to strech the dollar is the key. Eat healthy and that is all. Find hapiness in small things, 45K to start with is great, start a good life.
All the best and give us your opinion after you are in the situation yourself. Rmemeber, it may take you a while to find affordable places for leasure.

Hi desibabu,

I'm confused with post from bc2on and from loser. According to bc2on (above) 120 K or less than that is good enough and that's what I meant (the lifestyle mentioned by bc2on) but on other hand Loser says $120k is equivalent of bombay 2 bedroom style living, what is the truth then?

I don't think there are any universal truths in this matter, only opinions and subjective judgements.
I agree with bc2on that 120K is above the poverty line, for sure.
At the same time, I'm not sure about "Loser" claim that it's like a 2 bedroom apartment in Bombay, either.
I have never lived in Bombay and have no idea about the cost of living or quality of life there.
I suspect he is at the other extreme of bc2on.

In my opinion, yes it is possible to have a comfortable lifestyle at incomes well below 120K.
It is the definition of "comfortable" that is subjective.
One can start out with a modest lifestyle, live frugally, save and invest carefully and in due course will be able to achieve a fairly comfortable lifestyle, complete with large paid off house, 2 cars, superior education for kids, etc.

I suspect bc2on belongs to this camp.

But, it is really hard to continue doing so year after year and you have to start early (like as soon as you start working).

We have all heard stories about the neighborhood millionaire, the wealthy barber, etc. (made popular by the Wealthy Barber book, the Finish Rich book, etc.)
So it is possible to achieve but requires time, discipline and patience.

Any unforseen happening during this time, like large expenses, job loss, etc. will set someone back by several years which will take more time to make up.

On the other hand, to have the kind of things you are listing, I tend to lean towards "Loser" than you will need income in excess of 120K.
It is very uncommon for people to afford maidservants - it's possible but only the very well off are able to (or those who are able to write those expenses off as business expenses).
It is again very elite to send kids to private schools and elite universities.
Owning a fully paid off house having 4 or more bedrooms is not trivial, esp. in big cities likes GTA and Vancouver.
I don't think anyone can do it in a matter of few years with after tax income of less than 100K.
It will take many, many years.

Maintaining large house, good cars, private schooling takes a lot of money.
Buying house or car or putting kids in private schools is easy - but the constant expenses of keeping these up require a steady stream of high after-tax income.

Similarly, vacations cost money, even with online travel deals etc.
A typical 2 week family vacation to a sun resort booked through a consolidated travel site will cost anywhere from $4,000 - $6,000.
If like in India you want 2 vacations a year, you are asking for > $10,000 in after tax money right there.

I am sure others may have different opinion, but mine is that if you want to come to Canada (I assume you are not in Canada right now) and have the things you are asking for immediately (or very soon), you need to expect a family income of > $150,000 a year, more likely closer to $200K.
