Dunno if u guyz hv already landed or still planning...juz wanted to get sum info regarding settlement funds & Flights.
Settlement Funds:
There is some confusion regarding the settlement funds which are required at the time of landing... could these funds be in any currency ? Can it be in an Indian Bank A/c as long as it is unencumbered and belongs to you? Can these funds be shown in parts ... my local uae bank a/c + my spouse's a/c in UAE?
Also, juz wanted to reconfirm... we are presently in UAE and planning to land somewhere in April/May'09 ... we were informed by another friend of ours that we need to carry the settlement funds (Approx. CAD 14,000/-) either in cash or traveller's cheque in CAD at the time of landing... plus the amount needs to be declared (Funds in any form above 10,000 CAD)
Is it possible to just take a local UAE bank statement + a couple of CAD for a few days expenses or local currency (AED) equivalent to settlement funds in CAD or can we take USD since the AED is pegged to USD and incase, if we just enter & exit upon completion of PR formalities we risk a substantial loss in re-exchange (i.e CAD to AED) and moreover do we need to declare the amount while flying out ?
Flights:
I am an Fabrication Engr. wid exposure in Power Projects / Heavy Duty Manufacturing & Technical sales ... I was keen on AB and v also intended to land in AB considering the O&G job prospects but of lately i've been reading sum not so encouraging news @ AB / ON etc ... i ges da global recession is hitting far & wide ... i dont want to discourage u guyz but do u research well if u r yet to fly ( hv a luk at britishexpats.com ) sorry 2 all da CD's, if i've refered a diff. website here but as long as you want to gain more information it shudnt matter ...
I wud still be interested in knowing hw u guyz planned ur flights to AB... i've kept ON as an option considering the change in job prospects in AB.
Accomodation / Address in Canada for PR cards;
Hv u guyz rented or r plng to put up wid frndz out there? if u r on ur own hw did u manage ur local canadian address which is required at the P.O.E for PR card delivery?
Any suggestions / advice / tips ..most welcome.
Thanks in advance

Personally I know people who came from the Middle East especially Dubai and Abu-Dhabi and were quite disappointed after coming to Canada. Canada is a low income / low profile place as compared to UAE and you need to keep this in mind. Unfortunately no Consultant / Lawyer is going to tell you that. Consultants just want to close the case and get their money.
Only 3-4% of People who migrate to Canada will ever make to the same status which they have before they migrated to Canada. Most of the Immigrants are below the Middle Class Level. The only reason people stay back and struggle here is due to Children - have a better education for them.

Hello protrax218,
This is to answer your question.
I came here 4 years back. Being in IT I was able to get a job pretty quickly (2 Months ) but was not up to the same mark as my last job in Dubai. I had to take something just to start and gain some Canadian Experience. Within 8 Months I was able to move to a better job with my actual expertise.
The only reason I was able to quickly get into the main stream because I am in IT. Expect IT all other Professions are highly regulated. Whether you are a Doctor / Engineer/ Teacher you will need a North American equivalence. It is a different thing if you are not looking for a specialized job.
Did you know that your profession might be regulated in Canada? If no then you should check, unfortunately no consultant will tell because they just want their fees.
The big thing which people from Gulf will find is the taxes. Everything is Taxed here. Whether it's your Salary or Purchases. You will not be able to save anything. Also the Salaries are not as lucrative as compared to Dubai. I know Dubai has become very expensive now but most of the people who move here from Dubai are well settled and make enough to save quite a bit. Here it is quite impossible. Even a 6 Figure salary is not enough here.
This is my opinion. People need to decide why they are coming here. Current economic situation is not going to change any sooner - atleast for 2 years. The layoff's which are happening in North America and now in Canada is not a secret.
You need to decide why you want to come here. Most of the people who come here come for their children. Hence it is a personal choice. People in the past have been blind folded of the name and come to North America without getting into all the details. Yes a person who comes from India will find it much better - Life Style wise etc. But a person who comes from ME ummm...
be prepared for a shock.
