These youngsters, whom we jokingly refer to as ABCDs are extremely good kids who did well in school and society. They are respectful of their parents. Most of them did not take part in western activities like proms or spring breaks. They went to good schools, most of them aspire to become doctors, dentists or scientists. One girl who worked with me in the US was so disciplined that she said she will marry the man her parents select for her. A lot of them try their best to find their mate among their own kind and enter into marriage with their parent's permission and blessings. Amazing! I am yet to find an ABCD who has fallen foul of his/her parents. Most parents seem to be proud of their children.

I think 2nd generation youth are all very very different and its hard to generalize as you stated. There are many youth who are like what you describe above, and many that are the extreme opposite (that I have seen and heard about). I think it depends mainly on the family and the environment the family provides.

I had to smile when you wrote that most of them dont take part in western activites like proms or spring breaks. Most people dont have a choice about spring break - its a holiday from school :) Everyone gets a spring break. Proms are school dances and milestones. That is..in the USA. Canadian students generally dont get proms.

Career wise - its a standing Indian joke that all parents want their kids to be doctors, lawyers or engineers :) However the reality is that people from Indian backgrounds are found in all careers and all industries across the spectrum.

Culture means the different types of food we eat , the clothes we wear, the festivals we celebrate, the language and dialects we speak. Culture does not tell us how to behave or bring up kids .....these are inferences which we pick up thru generations of diffrent kinds of people so pl dont claim this to be tamil culture Folks we are all Indians speaking tamil and we are what you are not any different , tamilians dont have any special horns.

About bringing up children my husband says " Children are thru you and dont belong to you" as quaoted by Khalil Gibran. It means that they are individuals in their own right and parents are there to provide them with what they can , guide them when required, maintain a happy family environment and be there when ever the children need them.

I have experienced what happens when parents force their view what they believe and all it leads to is frustruation till a certain age and later become a rebel.

All TK says has to do is with immigration , If things are so bad why not get back now , India is booming with opportunities and with both parents educated you will living a much better lifestyle and living with your daughter most importantly. Dont believe that you are sacrificing all this for your child , she did not ask you to and neither will it make any difference to her when all she gets is money but not her parents which is her birthright. Dont do something like that to her.:(

As a parent I try to inculcate both western and Indian ways of parenting, I read international books on upbringing of children and I also listen to my mother on her ideas of how children will be like and how to inculcate good habits. I have 2 children a son who is 3.5 and a daughter who is 2. There are times when I spank my son for hurting his sister but we are trying to minimise that too by grounding him etc. He understands that better. I have realised that when I spank him he emulates that on other people so I can see which system is better.

Morning-rain : U have amazing views on raising kids , when I had kids I had no idea , I keep learning it gradually by reading books and talking to other parents, Kudos to you.

Thanks for your views. Its nice to get another perspective on the subject.

My child rearing views I believe are very north american. I have talked to many parents, non parents, read books and articles and this is what I believe from my research.

:)

Also, people who hit children just prove their inability to handle any situation properly. True idiots. How sad, a grown man "kicking" a kid. 'em to hell.

I think everyone speaks from their experience. Those that hit...were probably hit. Those that dont..probably werent taught that thats how you show your anger/power/control.

It is sad. Thanks though.

Say some of your friends recommended you to go to a famous restaurant..

You decide to go there on the weekend..but you did not like the food that much.

So you as a normal person would decide that well next time we wont eat there becoz we did not not like the food that much.

So same goes with Canada....unless you come and stay here you cannot really analyze the true situation....

and moreover it's my personnel choice...I came to Canada as a choice and I'm deciding to go back for good ..that's my choice which I feel it's better 500% than Canada...

I was going to say too: this is quite an expensive "restaurant" you have tried out.
To move your family is a very big thing, that too half way across the world.
A person can settle and be happy anywhere. The problem lies within ourselves not the external world right? If you want to see the negatives you will find them in front of you. If you want to see the positives you will find them infront of you as well.
