Shot in hallway, man gets no help
Three men attack; three bullets fired
Man found outside Etobicoke building

A man who was shot three times yesterday staggered through the lower floors of an Etobicoke apartment building looking for help but couldn't find any.

The 22-year-old Oshawa man is recovering in hospital after he was finally discovered, and police are appealing for witnesses.

The victim had just stepped out of an elevator on his way to visit a friend just after 1:30 a.m. when he was attacked by three men in the fourth-floor hallway of 6 Auburndale Court, an apartment building near Islington Ave. and Rexdale Blvd.

The victim was shot in the head and the bullet travelled into his neck. He was also shot in the thigh and the shoulder. The men promptly fled while the victim staggered down the hall, banging on doors for help.

Police said nobody, including the person he intended to visit, answered his calls.

One second-floor tenant said someone knocked on her door between 1:30 and 2 a.m., but her husband didn't open it. Peering out the peephole, he saw a black man in the hall knocking on other doors, screaming.

"We heard him say, `Please, somebody help me. I've been shot, I'm dying,'" said the tenant, who did not want her name used. "We didn't see what the guy looked like. We just heard him say he had been shot, so we didn't call (the police)."

It wasn't until the couple heard emergency crews outside that they opened their door and saw blood dripping down the front.

The victim made it outside the apartment building to his vehicle, where a passerby found him leaning against his car. Emergency crews called to the scene found the victim had collapsed on the road. He was breathing and conscious en route to Sunnybrook hospital.

The victim had surgery yesterday and is expected to survive.

Kamal Alizai was returning home from a friend's house around 2 a.m. when he saw police, ambulances and fire trucks outside. He said was barred from entering until 6 a.m. When he did go inside, he saw the aftermath of the attack.

""I saw blood on the elevators and stuff. The lobby was okay, but since the shooting was on the fourth floor, the right elevator had blood in it."

Police have no motive for the shooting and said the victim did not know his attackers, nor was he previously known to police.

The crime rate in Canada is measured by the number of Criminal Code incidents reported to police. In 2002, Canada posted its lowest crime rate in almost 25 years with 7,590 incidents per 100,000 people. The drop in police-reported crime is not the only indicator that the crime rate has actually fallen, however. According to a 1996 survey, victim-reported crime (which includes incidents not reported to police) decreased from 1993 to 1996. Interestingly, better behaviour seems to be catching on abroad as well as at home: Canada's waning police-reported crime rate has been mirrored in several other countries.

There are no simple reasons behind the lessening crime rate. The declining proportion of young people—those most prone to criminal activity—may be one factor. Other factors may be at play as well, such as education, unemployment, changing family structures or drug use.

Crime rates differ from coast to coast. Historically, the East has had lower crime rates than the West. However, crime rates in all of the Atlantic provinces have increased in recent years and rates are now generally higher than in Quebec and Ontario. In 2002, Alberta reported its greatest rate of crime since 1994, but still has much lower crime rates than its neighbouring provinces. Quebec enjoyed the lowest crime rate of any province in 2002, with less than 5,700 incidents per 100,000 people, compared with over 13,300 incidents in Saskatchewan, the highest among the provinces.

In recent years, many of our communities have become safer places to live, with fewer violent crimes such as homicides, assaults and robberies. The rate of violent criminal incidents per capita had been decreasing throughout most of the 1990s, though in 2001, it remained 6% higher than in 1989. In 2002, the rate decreased in most major categories of violent crime, including attempted murder, assault, robbery and abduction. Altogether, violent crime comprised 13% of Criminal Code offences in 2002.

Violent crime rates vary significantly across the country. Although Quebec reported an increase in violent crime in 2002, it still had the lowest incidence of violent crime in the country—719 per 100,000. Nova Scotia's violent crime rate was the highest east of Ontario, with 1,099 reported incidents per 100,000, although rates remained generally higher in the western provinces. Manitoba’s and Saskatchewan’s rates of violent crime were the highest among the provinces with over 1,600 and 1,800 incidents per 100,000 people, respectively.

The homicide rate—which includes first- and second-degree murder, manslaughter and infanticide—has generally been declining since the mid-1970. In 1999, the homicide rate hit its lowest level in 32 years, though it has increased slightly each year since then. In 2002, homicides, together with attempted murders, represent less than 0.4% of all reported violent incidents.

Fewer than 1 in 10 violent crimes in 2002 was a robbery. The rate of robberies has declined by 9% since 1999 and has generally been dropping since 1991. The use of firearms during the commission of a robbery has declined significantly in the last 20 years. In 2002, some 13% of all robberies were committed with a firearm, compared with 25% in 1988 and 37% in 1978.

Robberies were much more likely than all other violent crimes to involve youths aged from 12 to 17. In 2002, one-third of all those charged with robbery were youths, even though they accounted for only 15% of assaults and 9% of homicides.

I thought we were talking about Canada not the whole world :D
Being a Desi Canadian I care and would like to discuss about 2 countries Canada and India:)

Well , may be there was drop in crimes till 2002 in Canada ... but since last year crimes are going up... and to see this we don't have to go far.. it is here right in our own city.. the way people are getting killed in this city.. we will cross 2003 anual record by the June of 2004. And the funny thing is no one is doing anything to stop these killings, all athorities are pointing fingers toward each other and demanding money , as if our most effcient police is gonna arrest criminals with the handcuffs made of $$$ bills:p

What a shame :(

I agree its a shame though we both agree that Canada is safer than most of the countries.

Yes we should do something. How about all the desis who feel strongly about it write to the chief of police? All the best!
