Mightybuckzz I nearly fell into that trap....luckily I came out unscatched....Thats why, I always advise students to beware of the easy route of plagiarism... When writing papers, clear guidelines have to be followed...and every idea, every statement have to be referred to... Mere changing of statements does not insure that your work is original !

BTW...how are you finding U of T ? Can you share with us some of ur experiences ?

Hey, why dont u post some of your experiences here on CD for the benefit of others. What is your opinion on the type of courses at U of T,
The library facilities and other student amenities,
Dorm/Residence life etc.,
Access to professors etc.,
Any student unions/Desi student associations that may help new students..etc.,

We have plenty of posts related to newcomers arriving in Canada..but none that relates to new students arriving in Canada

ok here it goes......

1. I felt that the courses offered in MIE are too narrow...not much option, specially for Industrial Engg. A lot of room for improvement there. My friends in US univs have a lot more courses to choose. Dont know abt other depts
2. Library and computer facilities are gr8. Engg library has lot of material, books, publications, journals etc. Infact UfT library system is 2nd or 3rd largest in N.America.
3. MIE deptt is undergoing a major facelift currently..hiring new profs, upgrading labs etc. Oher depts specially Elec&Comp Sc are in much better position.
4. Frankly I dont know much about the oncampus residence since I live in brampton and travel to univ. Though some of my friends live off campus and its pretty easy to get. Costs about $ 400-600 pm. Finding roomies, specially fellow indians, could be a problem though since there are not many indians at grad level here.
5. Yes there are desi student assocoations like Hindu Student Association & Sikh Association. Then theres AMIGAS which is Mech & Ind Engg grad association which is very helpful
6. Profs are very helpful and encourage to meet them personally. Infact when I approached my prof for a project he was very helpful and fixed an appointment with me to discuss the details
7. I feel that UfT is too big & you dont feel the sense of belonging there which you might feel in a smaller univ. Plus I also dont like the campus being right in the downtown Toronto.....it should be somewhere away from city somewhat like MCmaster....but thats my views.
8. For students coming to study here, I would say the job oppurtunities are not that much like in US. Its not like India where you will have lots of companies coming for campus placements. They do come over here too but not in that great numbers....not everyone gets a job. Thats for those looking for a job after say BASc or MASc. For doctoral studies I dont have much idea.
9. I would encourage students to do a project of your interest as a part of your masters requirements. Many people do just 10 courses straight and complete their masters. I feel a project with a good prof will give you more insight and a valuable work experience too. Employers look for hands on work you have done.
10. Here there are two masters options: MASc (research oriented) & MEng (professional masters). Funding is guaranteed for MASc but harder to get admission into. You will have to talk to profs of your research interests and convince them you will be a gr8 fit into their research plans and projects. If you are planning to go into research field and do a PhD later then MASc is the right option. MEng is professional masters and you do not get any funding in that. However you can get TA and schols though. In MEng you have the options to do straight 10 courses or do 7 course+1 project thesis. MEng is much shorter than MASc in duration and is for those who want an advancement in their professional career. I guess for recent immigrants looking to get Canadian qualifications, MEng would be a better option.

I hope this would suffice. If I have left out anything or anyone requires more info let me know. Thanks ON for continuing with this wonderful informative thread for prospective students.

Cheers

Great Job Mightybuckzz... It is indeed heartening to note that you are en-route to achieving your goals... Give a shot for a PhD here in the USA :)

Now one more small thing...

1.) Can you please add [ b ] and [ / b] in points 6, 8 and 10 of our previous post...Make sure the spaces are not there in the square braces...

2.) Can you also give us some info of nearby places that desi students can look around for housing / groceries.. I think staying in Dowtown does have its advantages... but you sure do miss the "campus" feeling (the same is true with University of Ottawa)

3.) How does one go about getting text books ? or are the notes in the classroom sufficient ?

4.) Where does one go for SIN card and Health Insurance (International students especially...) ?

..as for the ack..thank you :) I dont get any benefot out of this...It just helps others who will come after me... and thats the sole reason why I like to share my opinion...and insure that others do not have to face the same hassles that I did...

1. I dont understand what [ b ] and [ / b] are for?

2. I know my friend lives at Spadina and College St. There are lots of residences around the univ.

3. Prof will tell abt the textbooks. For some courses I didnt had to buy books...prof notes were enough. For rest I did...they are pretty expensive generally more than $100 each. I would recommend buying used books online e.g. amazon.com or get in contact with some who took the course last time and is ready to give you the book.

4. I am not international student, so dont know much abt SIN, Health insurance etc. But I believe you have to got to the International Students Office and register first. They will tell you everyting.

I agree ON prospective students will benefit from this thread. As far as PhD is concerned, I want to do a job first after masters..gain some experience.

First of all I am thankful to u guys for initiating a very helpful discussion.
Specially ON.
Now what's ur advice for me.

I did my BE (Electrical) from a private college of Maharashtra..
Joined an Engineering college as Lecturer and after working for about 10 years came here last year as PR.
During my job I also did my ME (again from not so reputed institute)

Initially I was thinking of MS and then gradually Phd.

But under the present circumstances ( I am 35 with wife & 2 kids) alongwith financial constrints it seems to be very difficult.

Now to come out of the circle of 10-12 dollar jobs I am interested in some short -term (maybe upto 1yr) college course.
By the way I have interests in Drives, Controls, PLCs etc.

Any advice??????????

I hope ON will give some sincere inputs.
