I was reading the \"south indian food sucks\" entries which led to an interesting tangent on \"banning of indecent language for ids\" and at the end I was burning to say something. I tend to only speak about things here if I'm moved to passion. (is that word allowed?)
The site was locked. You do that? Why? Seriously, is there a way for the person who locks something to put a little blurb up saying why? It was like hitting the end of the universe... bloink... I could hear the pebble I kicked off the edge in frustration hitting ground 30 metres below.
Just a few notes on the original topic. I'm a sexy vixen. And I'm pretty sure my husband thinks so too. I didn't choose that word as a moniker but it certainly does not offend. I might raise my eyebrows quizically wondering why someone would on this site, but it would end there. I know a lot of families with children, some of my cousins are in their young teens and on the computer. I don't know a single one who hasn't heard, used or mostly ignored the word sexy. It's become that generally in use. Big yawn. I think the last time I heard a giggle in response to that word was from a five year old. But then she giggles when I say underpants.
I don't think it's a bad idea to censor if your purpose is to become a site with a particular use and with a narrowly defined audience and membership.
But if you are interesting in sharing of info, ideas, viewpoints, knowledge and everything else of interest betweeen Canadian Desis of all kinds, then perhaps part of the learning goes to cultural evolution in all it's shades of grey.
I think I have a lot to learn about my cultural roots by reading the various viewpoints here, both open and closed minded. I kind of like seeing all the extremes of opinions and all the interesting points of conflict. It's quite an interesting microcosm. If however, as a person not offended by sexy vixen and feeling quite normal in my reaction, I was to think that I was at a site where the majority did see something to be shameful of in that, I can't say that I would be much interested in contributing much or reading much. It would be a little boring if nothing else. But more significantly, I would feel unwelcome. And I would have lost something of interest and beauty to me.
I came from an extremely extremely traditional upbringing. My parents raised me definitely not to be a sexy vixen. At least not until I was married. But thank god they followed my lead in becoming more and more open minded as I brought more and more of the not-so-evil culture we were living in home with me.
My parents are almost 70 now, and though my Mom was raised not even to call my Dad by his real name (she still doesn't), they can often be found strolling hand in hand down Gerard Street and boy, my Mom sure is one sexy vixen!
Regardless, my only point is that I would hope that a natural censorship will take hold here, and that the site will grow wholistically and organically. I will definitely be part of it if it does.

I would just direct you to one more thread that addresses this issue..as for that word... No matter what you say.. It is an OBSCENE word period and as so many respected members have pointed out, this site MUST be kept clean ! (please ignore the ranting made against me though... I ignored them
)
The thread that I am referring to is here
http://www.canadiandesi.ca/read.php?TID=3804
As a good desi, I would recommend that you divert your mid out of such OBSCENE thoughts and instead focus on "GOOD" things , e.g., the Amar Chitra Katha thread that I started .. If you read that article you will understand what I am talking abt
Cheerz
*ps :- and promise never to use the S-word !

Allow me to quote MI:
"Thats the beauty of freedom of speech, the more we try to stifle it the louder it will get."
Just today I wrote thisto someone(you know who you are
) who was asking me about my muted involvement here
" Too much going on at my end. I try to read the forums but am thinking that its too conservative for the likes of me. All this makes for lack of motivation to 'make' the time for active involvement in cdesi."
However, voices like yours do make me think twice(probably to the chagrin of our fine 'respectable' folk). I too do get the feeling that this forum is turning into a site with a with a narrowly defined audience and membership. Maybe rightly so, but for the record(incase there is any ambiguity about my stand) *I object*.
In all probability, it's a lost cause. As they say ...I had to 'speak now or forever hold my peace'

Pinki Blinky,
A nice post indeed with good explanation about idealogies of various generations/cultures/regions of the world.
However, as a parent, or as a person who has held reasonably senior level management positions, I would say it is not always a particular act or word which elders/seniors object to, but most of the times, it is the thought process behind that act or word which seems to be the thing to be supressed. Some things are such which if not objected to in the initial stage, keeps growing and that becomes something unlikeable, though the original act by itself will seem harmless.
An example of that would be as below:
