I know , I am NOT talking about getting a job with the big guys and Franchises like Canadian Tire, Mr Lube , etc.
I am talking about mom and pop shops ..especially desi shops, which pick up anyone who knows how to fix cars..they don't care ( illegal ) but they don't bother
I personally know a few mechanic shops, who hire people lime that.
I know a guy who was working cash with one of these guys , put that on his resume and now working in Ford on the assembly line
He hated the mechanic job and was used big time over there..but he was only doing it for the so called " Canadian Experience " ..and to put it on his resume..it was a temporary thing for him till he got somewhereelse better.

3. Quality control. This will be a labour job and pays a few bucks more than minimum wage. You will be manually inspecting and evaluating car parts at various assembly lines at third party car parts manufacturers and parts and suppliers. They are always hiring for this job.
Adam,
I may have to disagree with you here.
In 2009, during the last recession, I was looking at the above job in Guelph - the hot bed of Automotive parts. I was not able to find even a remotely related job.
Unless, situations have changed, you will not get that kind of job.
Know that Canada has surplus immigrants , refugees who are looking for any easy job as it gives you $ 11 or so an hour. It is very difficult to get those kind of jobs, if any.
At the peack 2009 recession, Black berry was hiring like crazy for assembly jobs. Many got it at that time. However the company is bankrupt now (almost in terms of hirings).

To Automotive Engineer :
Sir,
Welcome to Canada.
Find a home close to your wife's work place.
Adam (post above) has given you how to live in Canada. Your aim must be saving money and buying your first house on mortgage (20% or 10% down will do).
At tim hortons, even if you buy a small coffeee ($ 1.50 + tax) as them for an extra cup. Divide the small coffee by 2 and each of you have a cup. Covers and straws are free. So close the cup with cover so that outside people will not see 1/2 cup full.
Now,when your wife goes to work, you head out to the govt. agency where they will give you free english course, give internet and printer connection (all free) to do job search.
Shoot off your resumes. Always call them to see if they have received your resume and expect when you can call back for an answer on your resume. If I were you, I would put some fake Canadian education. This willl put my resume on top. No one will check (atleast not for low level jobs upto $ 25 an hour).
In the meantime, sign for Gabriel Catholic school / career edge. This has 2-4 months waiting period (more waiting period in the summer). It is free and govt .sponsered. They will teach you interview basics / English / conversations etc.. for 1 months and get you a volunteer programme which will run for 3 months (no pay during the 3 months). At the end of 3 months, the company will (90% chance) hire you. In the meantime, if you get a job of your own, just leave the programme.
Any further info., call me and I will give you more information.
One bad things is that for your proper job, you need to travel. Oshawa has GM factory. Ford is in a god forsaken area (No bus). Many OEM manuf, are in Guelph and Woodstock. May be there are some OEM parts manuf. in Mississauga. Others will help you in this.

My few cents – follow the advice of successful persons and see how they get the success. Repeat their methodology. You will be overloaded with suggestions – just listen to your own judgment and you will be successful. There is no shortcut to success.

A Delhite in Toronto
Yup.
I second Delhite.
Sucessful person's would have had a specific plan and would have worked on the plan.
So when you land or even from now on, try to identify people in your life in Canada and start talking to them right away. You may be able to find them in Linkedin and Facebook.
Stop contacting employers / agencies before landing in Canada, as they donot hire people who are not yet in Canada, unless you are in a senior IT position or have exceptional skills which will bring money to Canada.
Try browsing CD and contact sucessful people and ask for their contact and talk to them.
There will be tons of people willing to help you on other issues in CD like free food, cheap groceries, renting, low cost furniture, second hand stuff like TV, VCR etc.
All the best.
