Peace (Murali)
Yesterday we (family of 3) decided to eat out so went to Guru Laxmi. The waiting was for over an hour (It happened 3rd time in a row) so decided to go to Avani. The place was 80% full. We ended paying $ 82 for dine-in for 3 persons - 1 starter, 3 dishes, 3 naans. Do you still think that they donot make much profit?
I think you are still living in the past.

You guys are right. Very few Indian restaurants make money. One of my friend who has a Franchisee of Opa (Greek) mentioned it to me once when I asked how these entities sustain without any profit. He told me they DO make money in-fact, but not from food. Now, it's tricky. Read on...
They do it by using(or abusing) LMO (Labour Market Opinion) to their monetory benefit. They file an application with a 'friendly' immigrantion agent here in Canada to bring a cook from India. This potential cook then pays about $15-17000 to the agent, out of which majority (upto 95%) money goes into the Restauranteaur's pocket. The rest is pocketed by the immigrantion company for their fees. Once this cook arrives in Canada, they work like slaves for a meagre $5-$6 an hour and that too 'bounded'. Don't be suprised as there are numerous people (read 'Punjab') willing to pay $15000 to come to Canada, legally.
So, you see? If they bring in 2 people from India, they have already made about $30,000 by doing nothing and also instead of paying a minimum wage to a Canadian, they pay half to this work visa holder. Now, do they need to be concerned about their sales? Nah! The cook or server can't leave the job as the work visa is tied to the company that brought them. Sort of double whammy for workers, and a biggest exploit.
I have heard from my cousin in Punjab that many Engineers, MBAs, land owners, are now enrolled in Cooking classes (laughable) so they can immigrate to Canada legally.
So, if you see an empty restaurant that has been opened for business for quite some time and wondering how they are making money, then the above holds true for them.
By the way, Govt. knows about it too:

Febreet that's a real eye opener . One of my good friends has opened 05th restaurant recently . Spend huge amount on it while I kept wondering if he was making any money .
He changes his brand new expensive luxury car every year and live in a big mansion .
I knew that he occasionally sponsor people from India .
Now it all adds up .

Hi,
I think there have been numerous debates around this. Firstly immigrating to Canada has become difficult, if someone is still getting a chance I think he should come to Canada. I came to Canada in 2009 as a dependent because my father had applied for immigration. Within 5 months I went to India because I could not get a good job here. I went to India and had to look out for job again. I was working in Securities Operations business as a Business Analyst before coming to Canada, but since I had got this opportunity to come to Canada, I left everything and came here. When I went to India in 5 months and started looking for job again, I had difficult time getting same salary again. I decided that I would come back with a better plan, I decided to do MBA from Canada and the fees for MBA from Top institutions were 60-85K$. I took GMAT, I got a job in Securities operations in CITI, I worked till 2011 APRIL. I got admission into Queens for 2011 intake. I could arrange for major portion of financing from Canada through OSAP, and Credit Line. I got a loan of 42,000 $ from Canada where I had not even lived without any collateral whereas in India to get a loan of 15,000$ it was so difficult which required co-signer as my dad, my flat as a collateral. Here itself you see the difference. Getting loan in Canada was like relatively quick and easy. Education was fantastic, whatever people complain, the kind of knowledge and experience which I gained through the program made me a better individual and I looked at life in a different perspective. After MBA still getting job was not easy, I had to look around for 2-3 months. I got through a role as a Business Analyst in Capital Markets in one of the big 5 banks here in Canada. I am got married after my MBA and my wife is here as well. My parents are also here because they also returned back in 2009 with me because though my dad was principal applicant he had to return because he could not get any job, now I am at least able to support my parents.
The point I am trying to make here is had it been India , Mumbai a place where I was there , I was struggling a lot, working for 9-10 hours, living in pollution, travelling was a night mare. After doing all this even if I was making 50,000 RS a month that was not good enough to buy a flat on rent and keep my parents. Canada has made me independent. There are flaws with every country and Canada would also have some flaws. When human beings can have flaws why can’t a country have?? No one is perfect. I am still coming up in life. Nothing is guaranteed in life. I am sure you guys would have seen the post by me about Mortgage issue with my brother few days back. Issues happen everywhere. We can’t compare Canada with United States. I know friends who are still struggling for Green Card and always thinking about it. That’s a different story altogether. 50% of my Indian MBA student community here were H1B visa holders from US who had left IT jobs in US and choose Canada for PR and of course education as well.
It’s different for everyone and it is meaning less to ask so many people about it. Some may have good experience and some will have bad experience. If you are really happy in India you should not think about anything else. If you think you are not happy and want to try out Canada and obviously ready to struggle a bit and believe that you have the necessary skillset or are ready to get trained (i.e. invest on education) then I think you should come here and give it a try at least. Worst situation you would fail right???? You always have India to go back and lead the life you would have been leading.
Very good post Vivek.
You have shared your experience very well and honestly. What you have shown is that you had different circumstances when you first came to Canada & when you returned again. When you came back, you came back with a plan. As you are young it was investing in education. The key was flexibility, and your ability to take decisions.
Going back to India was not a feeling of being a loser and returning back not of being a winner. It was working to a plan and I am glad you have done well.
Good Luck.
