Fixed Salary: 5000

Income:
10 Weekends - each day 200 dishes with average $10 per dish = 20,000
30 weekdays - each day 50 dishes with average $10 per dish = 15,000

Total Gross Income: 35,000
Minus Food Cost - 25% of Gross Income = 9000
= 26,000

That means the profit is 11,000

Do you guys think these numbers are difficult to attain?

Hi I am the original poster , and run my own fast food indian restaurant at Mumbai India, which by gods grace is into business since 30 years ever since my father started it.
And have worked in the UK, India ,for top hotels and also been working with my own restaurant since two years so have a fair if not exact knowledge what goes into running a restaurant and on that basis I feel the facts shown here are wrong .

1) rent definitely differs based on area and locality but minimum requirement will be 800/1000 carpet area to undertake a fast food operation for 40 PAX ( guest), also will need to accommodate staff and stores of raw material so this must be considered in cost.
2) utilities varies from type of operation but gas, energy telephone, Internet is mandatory and will be charged on commercial unit and not domestic rates
3)salary 5000$ !!!! Wonder from where you got this figure unless the owner is willing to do majority of the job himself everyday almost 2 hours prior and post operation as on basis of my experience to run a restaurant of even 32 PAX fast food which requires lesser staff you need the following minimum staffing
2 dish washer which is divided into two shifts
2 waiters
3/4 kitchen staff perhaps may be more depending upon load
1head cook
1/2) utility boy for cutting, cleaning, hygiene reasons.
So all together you are looking at a minimum of 10/12 staff for a 12/14 hour operation.
So assuming average salary is 10$ per hour and every staff works 8 hours a day you are looking at a daily wage of 900/1000$ irrespective of the sale you make in a day.

Also other operating expenses like maintainence of machine and equipments, plumbing and drainage is one of major problem in hotel/ restaurants world wide so also keep in mind your plumbers bill, don't know how much will they charge in canada, then you have taxes!!!!

Initial investments and so on
So since I have not been ever to canada don't know how it happens there these facts are just based on my experience and assumptions
Please feel free to correct me if I go wrong

Cheers!!!!!

If your main goal in moving to Canada was to make a killing in terms of wealth, or if you are tempted by the old adage, "grass is so green on the otherside", I suggest you stay home and do the very best you can. India could use a few hard-driven entrepreneurs. Canada, US and the rest of the world is just a load of BS....

I think there have been numerous debates around this. Firstly immigrating to Canada has become difficult, if someone is still getting a chance I think he should come to Canada. I came to Canada in 2009 as a dependent because my father had applied for immigration. Within 5 months I went to India because I could not get a good job here. I went to India and had to look out for job again. I was working in Securities Operations business as a Business Analyst before coming to Canada, but since I had got this opportunity to come to Canada, I left everything and came here. When I went to India in 5 months and started looking for job again, I had difficult time getting same salary again. I decided that I would come back with a better plan, I decided to do MBA from Canada and the fees for MBA from Top institutions were 60-85K$. I took GMAT, I got a job in Securities operations in CITI, I worked till 2011 APRIL. I got admission into Queens for 2011 intake. I could arrange for major portion of financing from Canada through OSAP, and Credit Line. I got a loan of 42,000 $ from Canada where I had not even lived without any collateral whereas in India to get a loan of 15,000$ it was so difficult which required co-signer as my dad, my flat as a collateral. Here itself you see the difference. Getting loan in Canada was like relatively quick and easy. Education was fantastic, whatever people complain, the kind of knowledge and experience which I gained through the program made me a better individual and I looked at life in a different perspective. After MBA still getting job was not easy, I had to look around for 2-3 months. I got through a role as a Business Analyst in Capital Markets in one of the big 5 banks here in Canada. I am got married after my MBA and my wife is here as well. My parents are also here because they also returned back in 2009 with me because though my dad was principal applicant he had to return because he could not get any job, now I am at least able to support my parents.
The point I am trying to make here is had it been India , Mumbai a place where I was there , I was struggling a lot, working for 9-10 hours, living in pollution, travelling was a night mare. After doing all this even if I was making 50,000 RS a month that was not good enough to buy a flat on rent and keep my parents. Canada has made me independent. There are flaws with every country and Canada would also have some flaws. When human beings can have flaws why can’t a country have?? No one is perfect. I am still coming up in life. Nothing is guaranteed in life. I am sure you guys would have seen the post by me about Mortgage issue with my brother few days back. Issues happen everywhere. We can’t compare Canada with United States. I know friends who are still struggling for Green Card and always thinking about it. That’s a different story altogether. 50% of my Indian MBA student community here were H1B visa holders from US who had left IT jobs in US and choose Canada for PR and of course education as well.
It’s different for everyone and it is meaning less to ask so many people about it. Some may have good experience and some will have bad experience. If you are really happy in India you should not think about anything else. If you think you are not happy and want to try out Canada and obviously ready to struggle a bit and believe that you have the necessary skillset or are ready to get trained (i.e. invest on education) then I think you should come here and give it a try at least. Worst situation you would fail right???? You always have India to go back and lead the life you would have been leading.

Excellent thoughts put together Vivek, you really seem to have a lot of positive vibes around you since you have coped up with the worse, and yes where does indian government helps us???
A least in canada you are safer and far away from daily hardships and issues faced due to corruption.
A country where building a small bridge takes years and within few years of its existance t crumbles down taking precious life .......
Problems and issues are every where its how we sort them .

2. Ability to work hard - check (note that you can even work hard in a factory job for years, the next point should make it clear I am not referring to this).
3. A goal and a vision on how to get there - check
4. Ability to differentiate sensible advice (both positive and negative) from nonsense rants - trust me, this is key especially if you're looking for advice on online forums
5. A bit of luck always helps :-)

Based on everything you describe in your post, I would say you should immigrate. However think through it because you'll be giving up a sure thing (that you are likely not very happy with) for uncertainty that may or may not work out as you want it to. Also, the immigration policies regarding parents etc. keep getting tighter and tighter here, so if having your parents with you is a must, it might not work out that way.

Good luck!

I agree with BlueLobster. To add my own 2 cents plus a few reasons for considering moving to Canada, at least temporarily:

If quality of life is your main driving force, then I think you should go ahead with your study plans. You can decide for yourself in a couple of years time, whether this is what you want, or you would like to go back to the "bad infrastructure, growing corruption" et al. Personally, I have lived in 4 Indian cities over the last 12 years, and I'm sick of the bad roads, the dust and pollution, traffic snarls, power outages, poor sanitation and sewage and drainage system, lack of public toilets, lack of basic and decent healthcare facilities for the poort, and most importantly the "corrupt" mindset of our people. Come to think of it, all the aforementioned reasons are a direct result of the latter, i.e., corruption.

Bribing is seen as the easiest way to get things done here, even if you are not doing anything illegal. This may not affect the upper strata of society (the rich and the upper middle class) but I can tell you for sure: The poor of our country are becoming poorer. They are left to fend for themselves, and they have nowhere to go. The rich and the powerful (read politicians and corrupt officials and industrialists) are ripping them off, correct that...gnawing at their flesh and sucking to the last drop of blood in their bodies.

Most of the folks here may think this is an exaggeration. Which may be, but not if you take the time to stop at any busy streetcorner and observe for a few mins how the poor of our country are going about their lives. They must have only one thought in their mind: Life's a bitch.

If you succeed they can safely claim that "you had it in you" and if not blame that you are no good.

How long are they going to carry on this racket?

Do they not have any sense of responsibility or accountability at their end?

I guess the Canadian govt could learn a lot from the Indian govt which exhibits the highest sense of accountability and responsibility to its own 'citizens'.
Lesson in responsibility :
Collect taxes (as high as 30% for people earning more than 800,000 INR, till recently this was the tax percentage for 500,000 INR) and in return bestow them with the worst kind of roads, frequent power cuts especially in summer when you need the AC or fans (for the not so lucky), inconsistent drinking water supply, poor drainage and sewage systems (every now and then, a car or heavy vehicle zips by and splashes the citizens with sewage water when they are walking on the street - and guess who walks on the street - of course not the rich politician or bureaucrat or their family members!!).

Lesson in Accountability:
If someone in power is caught, let them go scot-free after the initial noise goes down. What is the fate of the 'innovators' behind the Commonwealth scam, 2G scam, coal scam, etc.?? Not to forget, the biggest corporate scam in India - Satyam scam. Try and find out.

It reminded me a small story. There was a train full of passengers, stopped at a station. The people who were standing on the station were pleading the people who were inside the train to allow them to board and the people who were boarded, were telling them that it is too much crowded inside. With some persuasions, someone was able to board the train and the moment he boarded, started shouting that it is too crowded inside, don’t allow others to get in.
