Wearing white at a Sikh wedding...?

Hi,

I am just throwing this one out for general discussion as I don't know what is appropriate myself.

I am going to a Sikh wedding in a couple of weeks in a Gurudwara and I wanted to wear a nice white shalwar kameez I have BUT I am not sure what the traditional custom is...is it appropriate to wear white at a Sikh wedding? I know in some Hindu circles we don't wear white at weddings (or rather it is frowned upon) and I don't want to offend anyone. The suit has some nice blue embroidery on it but again...still not sure if it's appropriate...is it?

Although, it is better to avoid pure white and black at the actual religious ceremony there is nothing inviolable and if your salwar kameez has coloured embroidery accompained by a colured dupatta /stroll..that would do the work!

I'd stay away from white for the wedding.

Its the same as in hinduism - white represents death/mourning.
Wear anything with colour - even with embroidery it may not be enough..

however having said that............ lots of brides these days seem to wear white/red lenghas...so I think as long as its not pure white?

I've gone to tons of sikh weddings..and no one wears white..black yes...

Thanks everyone for your advice! I think I will save the white suit for another occasion and wear something a bit more colourful.

Is this just for men or women or both?

Back in my place, pure white outfit on men is considered prestigious be it is on any occasion where in the case of women it is never preferred. It is common for widow to wear pure white (again on women only), such custom is fading though.
