Hi friends,

Wanted to what are the general outfits that Indian ladies wear once they are in Canada?

Do they wear Indian Salwar kameej-sarees at work places or casually?

Beacause I have a lot of these items and was not sure whether to discard them or carry with me when I travel there.

Any feedback or opinions are welcome.

I guess it depends on where you work. Typically in an office environment you would not wear shalwar kameez or saris...however you can still wear them at other times such as in the home or at family/friend get togethers.

I used to wear them a lot but now find that I hardly wear them anywhere. Jeans are too comfortable. However for formal parties (ie. hall parties, weddings etc) they are great.

PP - do you get a chance to wear them often??

I do actually...especially when I'm visiting the in-laws side of the family, they are very traditional when it comes to clothing. They don't care what I wear when I'm not with them, but I don't mind wearing a shalwar kameez or sari when I'm with my hubby's side of the family. My own family on the other hand are very easy going and don't expect me to wear Indian clothes unless I want to.

I just went to a family wedding at the weekend...got a chance to wear some new sari's my mum got me from India, they are very beautiful and I got some nice compliments.

What do you do with any Indian clothes that you don't want anymore? I keep them aside for when my mum goes to India to give away but sometimes I have to wait a long time before she goes there...my MIL goes to India quite often but I couldn't give them to her as most of the items are pieces she has given me herself!! :D

I often donate them to the Sally Ann..They will take them.
I keep all my Sari's - luckily they dont change in fashion as quick as suits do.

Thanks for your replies...

Will defianltely try to shop for more formals than ethnic wear before leaving for Canada..

Also can you give rough idea as regards to the price for formals there?Say-skirt and top or three piece blazer?

Because in UAE,we get the formals quite reasonable prices say 500Dhs for a 3-piece which will be almost 6,000 IRS

If you shop for deals here you will find quite reasonable business formals. Just for you to compare. The last time I bought a suit from (what I consider) a reasonable shop I paid almost 130$. It was a good cut from a mall in downtown.

Sometimes when I have tried to skimp and found a suit for under 100$ something has not been wow about it.

Once I went to cambridge - out of town and bought everything at reduced prices. That was a bit of a travel. Must have got a suit in 50$.
