BL ~ you have done an excellent research which still (after 17 pages) appears to be beating around the bush and still does not answer the basic points I have raised over and over again .
1. What Indian ness would anyone have left behind with after being born and bred abroad to a non Indian mother and an Indian father who diluted his own culture and Indian ness by marrying a non Indian ?? She married a white American further diluting whatever she had and I wonder if their children would have any Indian identity left ??? (if they have obviously)....samosas ... and maybe a namaste also hmmmm I wished she knew her language.... maybe thats also been transitioned since she has visited India only thrice in her 42 years .
'With the help of an interpreter, Sunita narrated the experiences of her 195-day space odyssey'
2. What has she done for India - I wish she would have returned and been the 'second ' Indian to go into space ~ then all the celebrations would have been understood .
3. What has she promised to do for India in real - recall the protagonist in Swades who returns back. Well she can always help India with her experience and knowledge if she believes in India .
4. Why are Indians going gaga over her when she is NOT and Indian - NOR has she done anything for India - NOR will ever do (in most cases) .She had last visited the state in 1998 ..... 9 years back ... for her association with India .
What she is doing is lip service and we should be smart enough to understand this . Just like a handful of Indians in colonial era who I have quote before used to ape and worship the Brits ...... ' Burra sahab hai ' .
Compare her to the likes of Rakesh Sharma (1st INDIAN ) , Naresh Trehan , Ratan Tata , LN Mittal , Narayanswamy , Azim Premji , Sachin Tendulkar who may have achieved lesser in eyes of the world but have by far achieved more for INDIA .
She is a born & bred American and will be known as an American - and continue to serve American dreams and not India's - however much Indians may celebrate it & claim her origin .

' This morning I turned on the TV channels here in India. Indians are going way overboard in claiming Sunita as one of their own. Are we suffering from such low self esteem that we try to appropriate an American woman flying on an American technological marvel called the Atlantis ? [link]
Sigh! One has to agree. There is something intrinsically wrong with a country which wants to claims foreigners as its icons despite playing NO role in their success.
If anyone has to be proud of Sunita, it has to be Americans. These shameless morons are just crashing the American party, promoted by the Indian media which has long taken leave of its senses.
And this in a country which has an extremely bad track record of honoring its own heroes.'
