First and foremost there is a difference in USA and Canada. USA there is very little social security net and thus all the money in hand. The 30% interest is charged on interest income on NRO accounts. In your case if you earned the money in Dubai and remitted to India in your NON RESIDENT EXTERNAL Rupee account then all the interest income on that amount in non-taxable. In any case if you pay any tax in India on your interest income, you can claim a tax credit for the same in Canada as both countries have tax treaty to avoid double taxation. Doing good: ... Toronto (No pollution, Electricity cuts etc..). I spend Rs 5 on bus fare to my office (Rs. 10 on Volvo AC buses). Food is damn cheap. I have an Automatic car that I use on weekends. Employer is very good. I fly to Indian cities every week. I was offered a office trip to Dubai / Singapore that I refused as I have some personal commitments in India. Most of our consultants are from USA and hence I spend a lot time in 5 * hotels to stay and for lunches too (all free of charge and borne by the company). It is a far cry from the miserable life offered to me in Canada. Peace...

Being a Chartered Accountant myself who has worked in Dubai/Jeddah for 3+years I can show you CA's who have worked for Dhs5,000 and even less. Assuming a salary of Dhs 5,000 per month, this works out to Dhs60K which is less US$16,500 (exchange rate of 1US$ = 3.67 Dhs) And, how did this CA of yours prove to be in the top 4% bracket of the Accounting Profession. Further Action........: ...e medical papers from CHC London have arrived. However when I came back in the afternoon, he had a different story to tell. He said even if they get the papers from CHC London they could not issue the visa before next week as some papers were missing. I asked him what was missing. To that he first said that my spouse PCC from Dubai was not sent. I mentioned that I had sent it in February and in any case if it was missing they should have mentioned in the letter dated May 17, 2005. To this, he had no reply & just said that he would call me next week. Now I am willing to wait till next week. But the question is what legal action I can pursue if they reply in negative next week. .... I realized this in 2 minutes but when I reached back the family rest room the belongings were gone .... Oh man .. what was I to do if some one had taken them .... I raced to the security and they said their GM found the things and they had already announced for it .... Relieved ... Now I recall similar thing happened in Dubai 3 years back ... when I went back to the shop for my wallet , not expecting it to be there , the shop keeper returned it to me ... I doubt if my experience would have been same in India. I know what you must be thinking by now .. To KumarM: ...its currency will hold more value than before (it is in a surplus) so if the house currency is strong all investment in the currency are strong compared to other houses. ...........And may be some day the uneducated Anna (registered voter/ ration card holder) who manages the small Chai shop in Andheri E near IT park, will go on a annual Dubai shopping trip instead of thinking of sending his son to Dubai.....coz he knows his shop will be surplus as there's no dearth of his customers making money (IT guys)....
