A thought just came to my mind since we are talking about Desi's not being able to do well because of low command over English and booming call center's in India.
The reason BPO business is booming in India is because companies say India has a vast number of english speaking people who work for less money then people in western countries. Why then do the same english speaking Indians become not good in canadian english when they come to India?

amit I myself worked for a call centre, most of the time they give training to Indians so that we can change our accent to wetern style. As you said most of people in India have good command over english, I don't have second thought over it. I am with u on this issue. But how many of those good speaking english people come to canada. As I said in my previous post please check the threads in canadian desi. people score between 10-12pts for IELTS. and I must admit myself that mine english was also not very good back home, and I improve my language after coming here. and most of people I have seen do the same thing, when every minute of the day u have to speak in english your language skills automatically gets improved. I also learned french after coming here, but that doesn't mean that I can compete with the people who have first language as french.
Every year dictionaries get update, the reason because north americans start using some new words. And the addition of such new words is necessary for next generations. Our Indian accent is very good in countries like UK, where it is more of a formal way of speaking. In northamerica I see white using slangs in language. and we start using them after 1 or 2 yrs living here. While back home slangs are tought to people working in outbond or inbond call centres working for north americans.
and amit here we are not discussing y desis are not able to do well. we are putting our thoughts in writting y canada is not a good place to live. especially I am saying this to new immigrants that change yoursel according to the atmosphere around u and have positive attitude towards life. don't look after people who live here, eat here, work here, but still say Canada is not a place they want to be in.

sorry I just recently became a member, so will bring things from past posts. Duncan u said something about Laloo having criminal record and being a CM. What about George Bush. Convicted in Canada and US both. In Canada actually prohibited to enter in 1976. And he is the leader of the greatest power. And pls. don't thk all the govt. ppl out here are very clean too. Wonder where all the tapes etc of Bagri and Malik (Air india bombing disappered and why). Why did the case didn't have a jury??? Lot of questions to be asked. Gangs are not only Punjabi's. There are chinese gangs and white gangs too in BC. The only diff. is those get hushed up, while our's remain in the front page. A white or chinese guy kills a person by his car the news is in a small column generally on the 2-3 page while if it's an Indian it's slashed all over the front page for a month.

Buddy open ur eyes and see around u'll see corruption here too. Only diff. is that they won't take $20 from you directly. It's done on a diff. scale.

One place u wrote about using Calculators. Well I can tell you how much diff. it makes. I was working as a sales person in FT shop. After looking at 3-4 items the customer asks us what the cost would be. I give the answer right over there while all the other white guys are running around the store to find a calculator and then 1 in 2 chances they'll come to me and ask me to calculate.

Now I am working in a company in IT again (after 4 yrs of hardship) . We go our for lunches When the bill comes, we are dividing the costs, all of my collegues are taking out their cell phones to calculate and I give the answer. Maybe you feel their is no need to sharpen ur brain (most probably under the influence of these lazy ppl out here) but I personally thk it's quite important. Another thing we work our assess off 10-12 hrs a day to keep our jobs and these white guys know that and they misuse their power.

firstly I would like to welcome you on behalf of all desis on this site. Now I will answer all your questions:-
1) george bush vs laloo:- bro, please open ur eyes and see the difference between bihar and USA (now if u say USA is a country, then take any state in it). If u say that USA is a major power in world, then who make it stand where it is today? It is always lead by the leaders who have some capability in them, and who are corrupted and have always involved in controversys or criminal cases like bush, clinton (that monica case I guess u remember) but any leader of USA never came inbetween the advancement of the country. they always promoted good and had taken risks over technology several time. but what bout bihar? I don't think u have been to bihar at any time of ur life, I was there and trust me man there are no roads, no water for people, no electricity, I have seen childrens on platform sleeping naked in winters. most hardcore criminals are electing elections from bihar, it was disguisting. Bihar was a state with richest resources, and it is now the poorest of all states in India, forget comparing laloo and bihar with bush or USA.
I love my India, I care about it and thats y I get angry seeing people like laloo as minister of railway. not only laloo but every one there who are more or less like him. and this is to inform u that I am contacting the youths in punjab who are well educated and have no political background, criminal record to join hands and start something for the well being of our India but with no compromise on some typical issues. and I met many NRI'S who are ready to support my cause by provide support to them.
I know the corruption in Canada, but here u atleast get what u deserve. not like back home, where u can't even cross the red light car of that stupid, retarded minister. I have seen a guy being punished because of crossing a red light car of a minister, and he was being slapped in front of his childrens. how it feels? I hate these things, and I will do something for people back home.

2nd) issue of calculator:-
I SAID:-
" lets take an example of mathematics, there are pocket calculators in market then why our children learn tables in schools? we can easily afford to give them a calculator for their classes."

and I was just providing an example to rajand, as he was saying y not to use interpretors for english. but I didn't mean to buy calculators for our childrens as I support the idea of learning, doesn't matter it is english or mathematics.

I was reading the last few posts, especially one by rajanand, and I have to disagree about the command of English by Indians. Even looking at this site, you will find at LEAST 30% who are using incorrect grammar while posting. And I don't mean simple typos.

I work in IT in India, where you assume some of the brighter minds and good English speakers would be found. You would be amazed at their lack of communication skills in English. We (teams I have been on) have stopped team members from contacting the client directly. One of the reasons is that they are unable to compose sentences correctly.

If Bush hasn't come in the advancement of US then u really keep ur eyes and ears closed. Which ever area u can pick up of that country in the last 5 yrs, it's been going down. Texas used to be in the first 5 states of US and during Bush's term became 48th in ratings. If he hasn't destroyed things in US he has done that to Afganistan and Iraq for sure. When US took the stance against Terrorism, and India talked about terrorism from Pak., Bush came in between and told India that if they do anything to Pak, US will fight against India even though US itself had declared Pak a terrorist state ..................

And if u think there are no ppl suffering in that country gosh u should take a tour of that country. Look at the slums of NJ for eg. The amount of waste lying around etc is horrendeous. it was almost a hill you could ski down (if there was snow on it) the one I saw in 1999 (used to work in NJ as a soft. eng). Flies, mosquitoes etc etc etc. Just because these countries have the power over media not to disclose it to the world doesn't mean things are nice out here. Ever stepped in the subway of NY during rush hr. U'll die. No air as windows are not open and AC's are of no effect, can't move ur foot a mm. Try going down a lane at evening in Newark area, without ur car not coming out without a smashed windshield. What ur doing is trying to prove and justify ur coming here and trying to hide the problems etc which these countries have. Try walking around Surrey BC specially the Whalley area. Even the RCMP fears to enter that place alone in the night.

what do u get here that u deserve. Kids 15-16 yrs are driving like maniacs, run over ppl kill them, they get 3 mths of house arrest and then they have their licenses again and their names are not even disclosed and then they again run over and same penalty..............
U talked about rest of desi's reading newspapers, pls. read for urself first. U can murder a person in this country and get away with max. 1 yr in jail and then u can apply for payroll and then enjoy urself again. That's why now most offenses done by Canadians in US, the US is not allowing them to come back to Canada, because they know these ppl. will go scott free.
