Some US companies have call centers in US, Canada, India, and Phillipines and may be some other countries too but they all take calls from US. They could take all the call centre work to India and keep some backup staff in US if they wanted to!
I wonder what could be the reasons.
Is it because the companies do not want to put all eggs in one basket so to speak?
Is it because the companies know some people in US would not want to speak to someone outside their country or they can recognize someone by their accent?
While taking calls some people in US might think it is okay to speak to someone in Canada rather than in India?

Yes, some clients insist they want to speak to someone in their own country so the requirement.
Why companies prefer call center in Canda rather than india has 2 reasons
1) Quality:- this is a very weak reason to move a call center from India to Canada as most of India call centres do a good job but i hear of several and know of 1 company (DELL) who moved their call center out of hyderabad due to quality issues. This mainly happens when the indian boss of a captive bpo/indian vendor of the bpo mismanages affairs.
2) Export controlled-defence related data: This is the major reason for US callcentres to be in Canda. US Department of defense and US Department of Energy (DOE) has strict regulations as to who can access computers having design/sales information of equipment (engines..gas turbines) sold to the government. So a company which sells a very high end product to US govt may have 25000 employees working in US.Each computer system in the company may have access to the sales/design/price and other data.
Now DOE (dept of Energy) states that only permanant residents/citizens of US and Canada may access this information in the precense of the person who owns the data...
In this case indians or ayone else cannot access these computers so they are not able to provide technical support to these computers and hence it is outsourced to Canada.
I have heard DOD has even stricter rules regarding information access
3)Canada is called the near shored destination with a much similar culture and labor is still cheap compared to US and companies preferred to source their work from Canada instead of India. OFC this mindset has almost changed now...but there are a few companies who believe in this.
1 and 3 are weaker but 2 is the strongest reason why we have call centers in Canada. You will not find Tech support from Lockheed Martin computers happening in Gurgaon or Bangalore...but it can surely done out of missisaga :-)
