Meghal,
Did you visit proud Indian areas. Come for weekend and feel proud to be Indian. Buy grocery and pay bill to Indian local language speaking checkout girl. Have your lunch in Indian restaurant and they will take your order and serve you while talking to you in your native language. Why are you stuck with one stupid incident. On this forum people are yet refusing to believe what majority of immigrants are going thru and here you are stuck up with one Yorkdale incident. Probably that Gujarati Bhai was too impressed by the crowd around him which inspired him to shift from Gujarati to English. Let us know this weekend how you felt to be in Proud Indian environment
This place is about 15 min drive from Yorkdale mall.....only if you are not stuck up with the idea of seeing Gujarati / Hindi / Punjabi speaking people in Yorkdale mall......

Over zealous assimilation or inferiority complex? You Decide.
Sometimes, neither. My wife and I don't speak a common Indian language and English is our language at home and streets. We have friends fom varied demographics and hence for the most part English remains our conversational language. So far, it has worked out just fine.

I think there is an element of shame is us. I dont know what the source of this is, but it sure is there.
Perhaps centuries of foreign conquests, rule etc etc... has done that to us, where we associate our culture, language with inferiority and try to hide it or try to use say English as a weapon against someone not so good at it.
While there is self hatred in most societies, we have been able to take it to new heights.
Yep, we are suckers.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
