its not a regular router. you can get it from the VOIP phone company when you signup for service. it is called as analog telephone adapter(ATA). you could also try at bestbuy or futureshop but they might not be compatible with the phone service. i think the least hassle would be to get it from the service provider.

Daks,
No I am not using the packet8 video phone. I am using spectravoice's voip phone. They are different companies.

Hope it helps.

You dont necessarily need a router for VOIP phone. My service provider (Packet8) sent me a box that plugs into the High Speed modem. I just plugh my phone into the box. Now the modem my cable service provider gave me didnt have any spare outlets, so I bought a router and plugged everything into it. It took a few days to configure and get everything working together.

I am not using the videophone feature of packet8 - dont know how that works.

Why do you need the router ? as the ATA(the box from the VOIP company) has one port to connect to the computer which acts as the router.

Too late, I have already ordered the router... anyway, won't go to waste, so no problem. I did have a question for you guys using packet8.
Seems like packet8.net folks only give you a US number(no Canadian numbers) is that true? if so that is fine, but I just wanted to clarify. Also, the packet 8 folks, are all their plans like the 19.99 unlimited, only priced in US dollars? Do they have contracts or switching fees(If you change to a different plan)? I checked their website and a lot of the faqs but did not see anything specific. Actually I think they do have a termination fee of US$59 if you cancel within a year. do you guys no of other services that don't have a cancellation feel

thanks

I’ve been a user of Primus’ Talkbroadband VOIP service for more than 6 months (with a Toronto – 416 – number). Service works just fine, I’m also able to make pretty effective use of it as I carry the voice broadband router with me, while on business in the US and make calls over the internet as a local call. Primus does offer 416 numbers and allows you to migrate your existing telephone number (whether with Bell or Sprint, etc) to Talkbroadband.

Drawback with their service right now, is a little humming sound that I get in the background whenever I make calls. Besides, unlike Vonage and Spectravoice, Primus does not offer voicemail and caller id in their basic package.

Kabeer – a question regarding Spectravoice: Do they allow you to manage your account online (in terms of billing and making payments)?

Their (Spectravoice's) customer service doesn’t seem to be great, I’ve sent them a couple of questions – haven’t received a reply. They’re probably a new operator as well, their website isn’t completely up as yet.

you have to provide them with a credit card number for billing purpose. you can see the minute usage in real time on their website.
it is a local company, very small, hence for customer service try calling them for a better response. i found it a lot cheaper than primus and vonage for similar plans.
