If you have hiring authority and hiring for a professional white collar position (ex: engineering, consultation, marketing, sales, accounting, etc), would you hire someone that has visible body piercing (ex: stud on the upper lip, eye brows, tongue, etc) or visible tattoo?

Personally I would be inclined not to hire, but professionally as long as the individual has the skills to perform and the body piercing does not interfere with their ability to perform, there may be an obligation to hire (depending on the hiring practice of the organization).

In addition to the white collar position you also have to consider the fact if the position is client facing. I'd say if either of them are true, then I would not hire, inspite of the organizations hiring practice.

If a position requires certain physical conditions, (say eyesight / physical fitness in Air force), then the person may not qualify. If the position has such requirements, then the answer is known.

Otherwise, we're required to justify our decision.

It's a very interesting question.... The kind we can debate when sitting the night with friends..... There would be many related topics that would crop up....like .... Discrimination.... Bias....freedom....capability.... Perception.... Etc.....

My son's music teacher looks like a hippie... Dreadlocks and loose clothing and piercings and goatee..... But he is very good at his job and wonderful with the kids.....every time I see him, I have to make myself see beyond all the visual disturbance.....

So, I think the opener has specified white collar jobs..... Since tatoos etc... Are acceptable and even welcome in certain industries such as fashion, hairstyling, hotels etc.....

It's like euthanasia.... Capital punishment.....abortion..... Etc....debatable topic.....

You are correct. I and we do hire people for our manufacturing hourly workforce without any particular regard to "out of norm" conditions as long as they can do their job. However, personally, I go for someone who can demonstrate a candor/appearance/ability that is reflective of the position, especially, for the positions I have indicated in my first post.

No for client facing white collar roles or front desk jobs, yes for field/labor jobs, back office or other art related jobs.
Big NO for kid's education.

If the person is of opposite sex...personally I may not mind hiring such woman...provided she meets at least minimum needed requirements.
