We are thinking of hiring a nanny and are not aware of what all should we check before we hire. Is it ok if we give an advt on kijiji and hire from there. please share all experiences of people around who had/have nannys working with them...it would be gr8 to know if it helps to keep a nanny...are there any risks we should be aware of...
Hi Newusr,
I don't have an experience of keeping a nanny but I would not recommend of getting one thru kijiji.I m assuming that you will be leaving your kids with nanny......so it is a big risk.
Go for a registered one.Be sure to check the past record.
Also, make things clear at the time of hiring like what all you expect her to do besides taking care of the child,cleaning or picking up child from school etc.There little things can create problems later.

Live-in or Live-out?
If live in better go through the agencies. What agency quotes you may have to pay extra. But people who can afford to pay little extra then it is not a bad option. Couple of my friends are happy but were paying almos 1800 to 2000 per month including her overtime. We tried to hire one but did not work out because immediately after 2 days she asked for more money. Other one did not like to stay because we asked not to cook beef in the kitchen...so with agencies you will have much better flexibility, you can interview several nannies they can asses you as well etc..
Live-out..we chose this option and worked out very good. Though charges were almost same or in fact little more..but the nannie that we got was excellent. She took very good care of atoddler and a 4 yr old. I can give her details, PM me if interested. Not sure if she still does this work though.
Try candiansitter.com. worth paying membership. You obviously can asses that many young girls may want this as summer job, nothing wrong but we avoided.
