I just read that and sighed. Makes me wonder if we Indians are the most racist people ever. And we are ones who cry racism on the drop of a hat. Grow up people, it's high time now. Accept multiculturalism as a way of living or go back to that hole where you belong.

And that is not the first time it has happened here on this forum. So much for moderation on CD.

We had same questions when we ended up buying a house in Mississauga/Oakville . But after a year realized that Workwise Burlington and Hamilton are as much accessible as Brampton & Toronto. And foused only on jobs in these area. Fortunately got a good response and commute to Burlington is much better than driving to/From on 401 East.

This was the information i was looking for, so highways are the only issue with Brampton. I dont really care of libraries etc, never really used them.

I guess if i can save 15-20% and drive 5-10 minute extra for highway then i guess for me Brampton is obvious choice.

Also consider one more thing. Only one hospital for whole of Brampton! Just for your information.

Thanks a lot for so many responses, i am sure many other first time buyers will benefit from your replies.
This is really informative and helpful.

Actually i asked the exact same question to my Realtor in starting of December and he told me that he don't know, he said its one of the anomaly which he cant explain.
But he did gave me some comparative prices between various cities.

Like Mississauga is 20% more expensive then Brampton
Markham is around 30-35% higher then Brampton
Etobicoke is around 15% higher then Brampton. (He told me to stay away from this place)
Richmond Hill was 30% more.
Vaughan was 15% more then Brampton.
Oakville was 25% more.
Scarborough 10% more (He told me to stay away from this place).
Nort York was around 35% more and very old houses.

So based on this information we started looking at houses in Brampton and i saw different Neighborhoods in Brampton.

I liked what i saw, the only thing which he told me was to stay away from pockets where there are lot of truck drivers and his main reason for that suggestion was schooling ( according to him "most of the truck drivers/cab drivers are not that serious about kid studies or just don't have time).

Other sad thing i learnt was that many Old Indian Baba ji's in some areas (Near parks) make it difficult for young women to walk freely and they try to flirt or pass undue comments. I was shocked to hear that but i have confirmed it with different people and its sadly true.

So based on these two factor i am trying to narrow down my search on neighborhoods and then i will start looking at houses.

Its a long process but we are enjoying it.
Hope this helps other home buyers.

A very valid point. If I had kids, I would be concerned about where their playmates and schoolmates are coming from. Been a Brampton resident for over a year in the past and I know exactly what your real estate agent means.

So true!

Make a trip to the Bramlea City Centre mall or the Westwood mall in Malton and you can see this yourself.

B'lorean,
My comment was based on the OP's question as to why Brampton's RE prices are low and my answer was based on the facts of Brampton that it was purely residential and that we had a number of hard working low wage people which made the property prices to be down. Obviously it does have pockets of welathy and professional desi's but as it is mentioned by the OP, there are some inherent problems with having these kind of people.

To the OP :
you are in a good professional job and working in Scarborough. Why do you want to buy a house in brampton and commute to Scarborough for the rest of your stay in Canada. If you take up a job in RIM, waterloo, it is a MIn. 1 hr. journey from Brampton to Waterloo. Scarborough can be a very unsafe place to be (again in major pockets) but have you looked East(Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa which is hard hit by the Auto secotor) and north of Scarborough?
In the case that you are uncertain about your job, then your can choose either Mississauga (highly recommended) or Brampton. There are tons of new areas being developed in Brampton (Like near the Ravines eg. Ravines of Castlemore) where there will be a lot of professional people settling in. I am sure that for a person like you 20% or 25% increase in the property value will not be a detterant to you. In fact the Banks will be more than willing to give you any amount of moeny for mortgage based on your job / salary and interest rates are too low these days .
Toronto is defeitely over priced any day and so is Etobicoke. I diasgree with your realtor that Etobicoke is not a good place to live. Even in Mississauga, there are pockets to avoid at all costs and then there is the infamous Malton (which is near the airport)

Hope this helps

Peace by TK
