I am likely to land shortly in Canada. Whether learning french language will give any edge in getting jobs there apart from English. I want to settle any where in Canada, where job oppurtunities are good. Further any body, please suggest any other place than Toronto, as I feel it is full of immigrants and chances of getting jobs are bleak. Am I right?

French will only give you an advantage in Quebec.

In Toronto, I've even seems people survive with basic English.

Usually being bilingual has proven to be an asset in the East. Though Quebec has prominence, no doubt, there are some companies in New Brunswick, Ontario & Manitoba that may prefer bilinguals or may be interested in hiring them more than the mono-linguals.

Some jobs in Customer support and sales in many parts of Canada out of Quebec and New Brunswick need you to be speak French fluently. If you are less than fluent, you may not be considered.

8 out of 10 immigrants to Canada end up in the Greater Toronto Area (even though they may initially live in other parts of Canada). This suggests that the job prospects there are certainly not 'bleak'.

Other Desis may better advise other cities which offer 'good job opportunities'

Bilingual means you need to be fluent in French (spoken and written) which I believe is not possible to get by doing a crash course. In my office some of guys from North Africa(Like Morocco,Algeria etc) was telling me that though French was their first language back home when they landed in Quebec it was extremely difficult to follow or pronounce Frnech Canadian style French.
So my point of view is if you want to be Bilingual you need to put more than 100% effort and take it very seriously..your target will be like like Lallo Prasad Yadav or Injamam Ul Haque speaking fluent English(not hinglish):)

On some points i agree, on some i dont ;)... Again these are "MY" opinions :)

Bilingual means "Using or able to use two languages, especially with equal or nearly equal fluency." (read/write/speak).

For most Canadians, U R bilinigual if u speak English and French. Otherwise ur not (DON-MATA u speak 6 other languagues) :D

Agreed, Quebecwa French is a dialect of French from France (A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists). Dont think its that different tho...

Know lots of Indians who speak such good Quebecwa French that locals are surpised and they cant help stop applaud when they hear it... Agreed, there arent many tho....

tinku,
French will always look on ur resume, no-mata what job u do.
Usually job postings specify if French is preferred or required. U will have a upper edge if ur competing with someone who speaks only english and ur job involves communicating with people who speak French.

If u restrict ur place of living to somwhere where french is spoken, u will need to learn it. Otherwise, U can survive and thrive just on Anglais ;)
