Greetings,
I am looking at options for playing some UK region DVDs here.
My first thought is to get a multi-region DVD player that can play North American DVDs as well as other regions.
But a person at the electronics store told me that even if I get a multi region player, the TVs available here in Canada won't be able to display non N American DVDs.
Does anyone know anything about this, or have succeeded in playing such DVDs?
What are the options?
They play on my computer well, but I would like to play them on a regular TV as well.
Any ideas?

You have very limited choice. You can tweak the APEX brand of dvd players or a host of other cheap "WALMART" branded chinese dvd players..BUt eventually you have to view them on your TV....which you cannot.
North american TV;s follow the NTSC display standards...UK dvds are PAL encoded. The PAL to NTSC conversion will be done by the dvd player and the resulting output will be shown on ur TV. I abandoned it a long time back as the picture was awful. If I had an anamorphic video...i would be getting a B&W display and non-anamorphic display on my TV !...So unless yo have a dedicate PAL TV system here, I am afraid your only rcourse is to watch it on ur computer. YOu can always take the signal out of the box and display it on your TV...(using TV output)

One of the diff between Pal and NTSC is the resolution of the images. Pal has 576 pixels of vertical resolution vs 480 pixels of NTSC res. So about 20% more resolution.
I dont think a video card can compress PAL to NTSC...thus what ON has mentioned may not be possible. You can check with your videocard vendor. If a card gives out PAL signals...that what your tv will try to display.
There are software that can do the compression but its a hassle.
You do get multisystem TV's that can play both Pal and NTSC. That would be a good option.Chandresh has a multisystem tv(more $) I think...ask him about the quality. I think thats your best bet.
p.s: a conversion interface like a Tenlab Multisystem Video Convertor, or similar device would work too...300$-800$ depending on the model...I say put that into a multisystem TV instead.

If your video card(where your comp monitor plugs in) has an svideo out...an svideo cable should do....as long as yout TV/VCR has svideo capabilities

some video cards like ATI all in wonder have composite(rca) out so all you need are the cables to your composite device
You can give it a try but I dont think it'll work.

You need a video card with S-Video or optical cable output. However, lets say your Computer display is set at a resolution greater than 800x600...then your TV cannot handle that situation..I tried this once....with the ASOKA dvd..This was a R2 DVD from the UK...

Let me relate a conversation I had with a Best Buy salesperson in the US over 5 or 6 years ago when I was buying my first DVD player.
The salesman said the data on the DVD is in digital format - it is encoded so that it can be read only by specific region players. Now the output is decided by the player and you can specify what output you want the player to send to the display unit (TV). So technically, as long as your player and DVD movie are compatible, your player SHOULD be able to send the output in the format the TV wants. In other words, the issue is with the player not with the TV system.
I also remember setting up my first DVD player - this was a Phillips, dont remember the model#- but there was an option to change the default output NTSC to another format (say PAL). My current DVD system - Sony - does not have this option in the setup.
Please keep us updated how you are able to get your DVD and TV to \"talk together.\"
