Two questions

(1) Are DVD formats different in Canada and India, same way as VHS is (NTSC v/s PAL). Can a DVD purchased in Canada, run on an Indian DVD player?

(2) I have some music videos (I think it is WMA files) on my computer. If I copy these files on CD, can it play on a DVD/VCD player?

Any input will be greatly appreciated

Dfwrp is right and wrong....

If Indian dvds (from India) are encoded in PAL then you cannot play them (ideally) in Canada..However, you can get the Malata DVD player . That will do a PAL to NTSC conversion ( which will screw up the picture big time ) and then you can watch your PAL encoded DVD's... The same case with Dvds from UK etc.,

Also, you need dvds that are Region 0..or you need dvd players that can be made Region 0 ...APEX, MALATA< and a bunch of those Walmart DVD players can do that... Brand name stuff like Panasonic etc wont allow you to play Multi Region Dvd's

Dvds purchased in Canada (NTSC encoded) can be played in any Region free player in India... YOu can even watch the film on a regular Indian TV screen !
The converse is not possible though

Looks like it takes a lot of work to make those DVDs work here.. why not put them in the computer and play using the VedioLAN player and use S-Video out to connect your computer to TV.

Nowadays you can get a graphic card for about $50 which will have the S-Video out option.

thanks for the input. But let me be very clear

I am planning to gift my nephew with a DVD. My nephew in India. So I would not like to send him a gift, which he receives enthusiastically, but is of no use.

And to be very frank, there is nothing else to buy for him from Canada, except for Chocolates. India is too warm for Canadian sweaters. India has much variety of clothes. And some of the stuff is too expensive. And above all, he is just a kid.

So I am still in a limbo as to what to buy for him
