Good discussion... always liked the topic about luck.
Here are my two cents..Some call it luck, some call it coincidence and some call it randomness. The word I perfer is probablity. So of course luck/coincidence/randomness/probablity exists. The important thing is how do we deal with it. Somehow I have seen the semantics play a big part in how we interpret the same thing. Luck is supposed to be this unkwown factor which some people readily accept as being responsible for everything. Then there are the opposites who would never attribute any success or failure to luck. However, you change the word to probablity and you may get a different answer.
No wonder, businesses are spending big dollars on risk assesment and management. The idea being that the probablity will catch up with you some time or the other. At that time you can call yourselves unlucky and just brace for impact. Or you can be prepared and minimise the impact.
To get back to the original post. I believe the gentleman got into a job without an interview because he had a network. He got his first job because he acted decisively to try to get a meeting with the president of a company where he didn't know anyone. He may call it good luck, I don't think that was the reason.
Some members have suggested that extra ordinary people sometimes don't get jobs while someone less suited may get it because of luck. There can a be whole bunch of reasons for that and most of them would have anything to do with luck. I have rejected brilliant guys during job interviews for the very reason that they were brilliant and over qualified. I have heard the complaint that people don't hire desis because we are over qualified. Think from the position of the manager. He knows that the moment that overqualified guy gets a better offer he will move on and the probablity of that happening is very very high compared to a guy who is just qualified. Then the employer has to start fresh trying to get a new person and train them. Sometimes the extra ordinary guy does not have the character profile or the attitude the employer is looking for. And then there is always networking and people skills. Laloo may not be educated, but to get to where he is today takes more than luck. Probablity/luck can be the deciding factor only for some events, not your whole life. So let us not ignore it, but at the same time let us not make that to be the most important factor.

Souvik

Very well said Satish. Together with you, I also strongly believe in above four lines. My opinion on luck / hardwork etc. is that although luck is "somewhat" imp, but it's not the end of the road. For eg., with luck, you may have a dish full of meal, but if you don't take the pain of using your hand and mouth, you can't eat it. Moral of the story, SUCCESS is a combination of Hardwork (1st ingredient) + Luck. But sure, luck favours only those who sow good thoughts, habits, character and deeds. That is what creates your DESTINY.
No matter how hard you work, you may not succeed, and it is not coz luck doesn't favour you, but it is coz you didn't do some good things in the past OR you did something, that you shoudn't have done. I really DO NOT understand the argument as to why ricksahw driver and labourer are not making more money even after so much of hardwork. Well the reason is, as I explained, it's not only hardwork but your KARMA, DEEDS that also helps you in succeeding in your life.
Dhiroo Bhai, Mahatma Gandhi, Ram Jethmalani etc didn't reach the position sheer by luck. Nobody gets luck by birth. You create your own DESTINY. Once again the four lines by Satish, is what matters the most.
enjoy

All the arguments presented are true.
Can anyone define success in absolute terms? It is a relative term, in today's materialistic world more determined by the amount of wealth one accumulates.
What do you term as success?
You determine all the essentials of success, ask any one who has all of it but wealth, and enquire whether he is successful, and he shall negate it.
More often in our society opinions, advises, guidance, blessings, are sought from this persons, and other important acts are performed by this(wealthy) so called successful persons
Karma ,definitely shapes the destiny of an individual.
Famous preaching from \\\"Bhagwad Gita\\\"
\\\"Do your deeds, and do not expect your rewards\\\"
Derive your satisfaction from your conscience, \\\"you 've done your duties\\\"
This is what is \\\"SUCCESS\\\" IMO

It could even be put like this - With hands and mouth you can eat the meal, but if there is no luck, you might not get the meal in the first place.
Secondly, even if you do not use your hands, (or can't use them), you might be lucky enough to have someone love you so much that he/she could feed you with his/her hands!
Well one can find a person who can feed him/her, but you still need to use your mouth, he/she can't use his/her mouth !!!!![]()

And next - compare yourself to those children born with disabilites, or those persons who for no fault of theirs were involved in tragic accidents taking away their hands!?? Isn't it pure luck (or bad luck)? How will their previous karma in this life help them?
I agree with you on the point that one's KARMA from pr life can be a factor for one's DESTINY. But again, let us suppose that one is not an unfortunate person to have taken birth as a disabled person, he/she can still change his/her DESTINY, by cultivating good thoughts, habits, character and deeds.
That's what I believe.

I would say - that is the ONLY thing (I mean luck) that you get by birth. Rest Everything is aquired or created by you!
Someone may be a lucky person to have taken a birth in very rich family, but if he/she doesn't carry good values in life, his/her DESTINY can change and he/she can become a misreable person.
So you see what I mean now !!!!!!![]()
As you said, just my opinion !!!!
