I fully agree with you, as I have been at the receiving end of this bias. But at the same time, for bright students with inclination towards maths/science, perhaps too much emphasis on the values of education, rather than academia, can hurt them.

One must understand the impact of science & technology in a country's development. If a student chooses to study science after being made fully aware of all career options and his/her talent, I am OK. But one should not be forced to study science/maths just because their parent's bias.

Sadly, the Canadian economy is more based on service sector, undermining the importance of pure scientific research. There are few technologies that are Canadian, eg. blackberry, CANDU etc.

We don't need the future generations to be just hockey players or social workers and sociologists.

Nobody is discussing about not studying maths/science. It is a question about students, esp. of Indian origin being forced to study math/science just because of the bias.

Studying maths/science is not uncomfortable for all students. For me, it were subjects like history, grammar, drawing, civics that made my life uncomfortable. Once, I was past school life and started reading literature, the whole beauty of language opened up for me.

On a side note read this

It is equally condemning for parents to barter on their kids behalf

I think you are not able to understand the whole question and response of MR in particular and other people in general. (may be it does not require Math/Science which you are very good at but not others???)

The thing is, and please, please, please.....think seriously before you jump to putting something here - define what you mean by education. Is education simply academic learning or learning life skills too? Is it learning only the formulae of math or learning how they are used in practical life too?

If it is only academic learning, than is it restricted to Math and Science or involves Languages, geography, history, social studies etc. etc.?

If it is only math and science, how come Canadians are far ahead in life style than many other countries including India where the math and science are great. How come it is Indians who have to come and live in Canada and not Canadians who have to go to India to live a better life because with more and better educated people in India (math and science making them better than others), that should be the place most human beings should like to live in.

THINK AND THEN comment.

U r mixing the lifestyle with education. If u have to just learn lifestyle then one's parents can contribute a lot and we do not need teachers of diff. subjects.

Education has nothing to do with the life style. There are numerous examples of people who were uneducated but lived like a king.

If it is not a question of academia then why bother where u are being educated.

I think u need to understand the question first as u started comparing lifestyle in India and Canada where as the question is about the education not the lifestyle.

Well, I don't have to say much but we should not forget the end results.

The end result is that Canadian students always found themselves weak in Science/Math irrespective of the facilities they get in Canada.

Who cares about the education environment, if Canadian students asked to compete with Asians in Math/Science, they will definitely fail.

There are lot more schools/universities (Other than IITs) in India, which provide very good education.

So what is the end result ... is it that Canadian students have to go to India to get higher education in maths and science !!! Perhaps you are confusing the concept of quantity with quality .......
