Yes, we all read about that unfortunate incident in the newspapers. It was a stupid decision by an immature teenager. Are we gonna use it as an example to prove there is a trend? I don't think so. I appeared in JEE in 1995, but couldn't get through because I didn't have what it takes to be an IITian. I didn't kill myself, instead I settled for what I was capable of achieving.
And you are right, we shouldn't digress from the main topic.
Reservations is the biggest enemy of meritocracy. By offering reservation through relaxed entry criteria, we are fueling inflation of moderate credentials as opposed to the promotion of merit based education system, which is the foundation of many progressive countries.
Meritocracy should not be polluted by injecting relaxation of entry barriers, rather should be encouraged by offering financial aids to the underprivileged although deserving candidates only.
Currently, candidates (not just at university) but also when looking for a job, rely on caste and religion.
That is fueling complacency, and low standards.
And demands for more and more quotas.
