****You could say that deregulation and aggressive markets and competition make sure that the commodities are cheaper in the US. The same reasons could be the reason why MILLIONS are going to lose their homes down south soon. Now we got to find out if they would rather be homeless or pay more for eggs.

So bud what exactly are you trying to do? Make Canada more like the US? Or make only Canadian commodity prices like the US? Or just gas prices like the US? While keeping the prescription drugs price cheaper and the regulated mortgage industry same as they are? ***

Sure I did, and that's why I am confused. What does lax credit policies in one line of business got to do with competetive pricing in other LOBs? If Toyota's cost less in the US than in Canada, how is that a threat to home owners?? Same is true for the "price of eggs" :D

I was in London , Uk 2 months ago and I agree that the prices are over the roof there and that the salaries are very less when compared to the prices there , Even Paris , France has sky high prices.
However, it remains to be seen if UK/French citizens are being gouged or if the taxes on these prices actually go to make the lifes of UK/French citizens better.
The topic is about being ripped off and I belive that the main reason why it is so is that b'cos the prices in Canada was set at an exchange rate of 60 US cents to 100 Canaidan cents. Now with the Cdn cents at 96 to 100 us cents, it is truely a rip off to Canadian consumers..
I donot blame the govt. in taking extra revenue to run the country. Let the products be taxed by the cdn. govt as necessary to run the country in a good way. What I am concerned is that the companies that run the business should not rip us off and pass the savings / earnings to shareholders / investors / private individuals...
I still belive that nationalisation of certain businesses like banks, oil copanies, insurance companies can actually work towards the consumer's benefit. Besides we are not in India where the govt. / govt servants are corrupt.

Hope this helps.

Peace

I resonate with you on that, it is evident from the price of several products that we end paying a ratio of 1:1.6. But again, be it is in U.S or Canada (at least to a greater extent), it is consumer driven economy. If the demand goes down, naturally the prices will go down. Gas being center of the stage on all price hikes, its consumption need to be seriously reduced (energy being next), unless this comes out as a co-operative move, you wouldn't see much impact.

We have every right to be critical about the price / policies but bashing a country as a whole could make life miserable. In South, I am still feeling puzzled why there isn't any talk about $1B going from tax payer to wealthy cats of wall street.

Awww come on DT! You are too smart for that pov. Ok lets put it this way.
You may be paying more for your Toyota and eggs right now BUT *maybe* your current (unhappy) situation of being in Canada, saved you from having your home taken away from you (p.s: please dont say you are not one of those who would sign up for one of those leaky mortgage deals...I am just drawing a tongue in cheek comparision of the different sides of the economy by my eggs/homes/you example)

Honestly I love the US too. But I am currently happy to be in Montreal and Canada. My personal experience shows what really matters is me and not the place I am in...it maybe different for you but then its all about perspectives isn't it?

BTW: talking about doing something, I think your initiative about aggressively using the small claims court is commendable. I would not club you with those on this forum disenchanted 'by choice'.

... not yet.

:D

Thanks for the compliment Jake, but here yet again I must disagree :)

Your point above is based on the assumption that *maybe* if I was in the US paying less for eggs and such, *maybe* I would have lost my home to a leaky mortgage deal so *maybe* I am better off in Canada where though I have to pay more for eggs, atleast the government regulates the mortgage industry so atleast my home ownership is *maybe* safe.

That's a lot of maybe's and I know you are a too smart for this pov too ;)
