Cd's,
This issue has been on my mind for the past 2 months but was afraid of starting this topic for the fear of backlash. However with the recent spanish air accident, I feel it is appropriate that i raise up this issue.
Spanish air accident : http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/483694

My comments :
I almost drive around the airport (Pearson) , every single day and see numerous flight take on and and land every time I drive there. I also find that Pearson airport is fully populated around its boundaries with numerous high rise building and apartments. It is an accident waiting to happen. If any of the aircraft (I know that the possibilities are in the millionth) has a engine trouble while taking off / landing, it would land upon densely populated areas causing immense death toll. I donot know how in a deveopled country and sparsely populated such as Canada, they can even think of expanding (remember Terminal 1A or 1 B built at a cost of a 1 billion $ or so) in such a urban area. Ideally the airport should be moved to the suburbs and the landing / take off path should be barren land for 20 kms or so ....
WHat is the Cd's take on this?

Peace

TK ----The recent accident was a technical problem with the aircraft. It had nothing to do with services provided by the airport.Pearson radars and ground services are very good. As far as engine flame out is concerned --it can happen anywhere at any altitude. Even if one engine fails--the other engine is designed to take the load of the aircraft. Most of the accidents during landing and take off happen due to pilot error and bad weather (both contributing at the same time). The recent accident most probably took place due to overheating in one engine-- --thereby causing the debris to hit the rudder which made the aircraft to lose balance and come down. u r most welcome to ask any specific technical questions

TK if you study any airport you will realise that the "flight path"does not have any high rise buildings. There are height restrictions in building code for buildings that are in the flight path. After all planes land on the runway and that does not change.

In case of Toronto ... it is already in the suburbs .... surprisingly it has hardly any connection to the toronto city...... like subway or transit.

Again if you see the flight path of landing & take off .... there are mainly industrial areas or warehouses. Infact the regularly used landing strip used has its approach over 401 / 410 intersection.

So relax

Lucky,

I certainly think TK has got a point here. The recent accident was ofcource because of the engine failure but the maximum load on the engine comes when it takes off or during landing. Correct me if I am wrong.

I haven’t heard much of plane bursting into fumes while in air & then crashing in the city area unless there are some terrorist in there. But I have heard of planes crashing while landing or taking off from an runway on the airport most of the times. This might create an havoc condition in the surrounding area if it goes down after take off or prior to landing. You never know…….

I stood in my balcony right now & I witnessed 3 takeoff & 4 landing within 5 minutes on pearson airport. That makes 7 plane transactions within 5 minutes.

Putoo

Do you know are there any propane distributer within what you describe as mainly industrial & warehouses ??

Do you even know what would happen if 401 or 410 is damaged & broken completely ?? 401 is the busiest highway in CANADA

Please don't go in any arguments on this, none of us no matter what we feel or say can bring changes in airports or on their paths. Why we look at Pearson, see Heathrow (which in itself is a mini city), York’s JFK, and Miami international and not going further our own Mumbai and Delhi airports are in the cities.

Personally I don't like landing in any of them...the moment you are on (airport) sky you see buildings, homes and in-between the airport. The one landing I've enjoyed with the view was for Switzerland...full of greenery and empty land!

Anywhere you go in the world you do the same ... you can see landing & take off from a high rise ..... what is the point !!!!

As for propane .... dont know what it has to do with the airport ... what about fuel pumps .... what if they blow up !!!!

Putto,
By high rise, I mean building around 10 stories high and a lot abund along the flight path.
Let me give you some examples. There is a landing strip at airport road which has a lot of these building in which a signaificant amount of office spaces are there. The site is so tight in this area that the Airplane landing guiding instrument is in the median (middle) of the road.
Pearson airport has the landing strips at directions all across the airport. There is a flight path where the take off / landing is directed at the 400 & 401 intersection and Yorkdale mall is in that path.
As you said there is one at the 401/410 intersection. Imagine if during a traffic jam, the plane lands on this part of the 401 on top of all cars?
The next one is near the 427 (east of the 427). The runway in this case is close to the road and there are tons of apartments / hotels / woodbine race track in this path.
There are just 2 or 3 runway direction in which the path is over waste land / one storey industrail units. One is some where along Brampton where I regularly go to see planes land. This is mostly vacant land (as of now) or 1 storey industrial buildings.
But as a whole, it is a dangerous situation , if something goes wrong.
I have never been to almost all airports in the USA. Is US airports better or worse (in this context) when compared to pearson.
Even when I landed in Pearson from London UK 2 months back, Pearson had a thunder storm watch and as a result the flight has 10 extra minutes to land. We flew over densely populated areas (from pearson to the lake and then back to pearson). From the air I could see the at allmost all sides of the airport there was huge development with very less free vacant land.
I know that many airport design by laws that there is no developement along the path of the runway. Pearson does not follow this rule at all. I wonder how the regulating body / watch dog allows this and even allows for its expansion. The recent propane tank explosion is another major mistake that Toronto did (Having this flamable facility in the close vicinity of houses / Bombardier aircraft manuf. facility). When will Toronto ever learn?

Jona : I have landed at Zurich airport once and I could see the plane going over many 2 storey houses before it landed. May be it was just my babd time.

Peace
