Its true to an extent that you miss langotiya yaar. Don't we miss our school days most? And I think that's why we still go India. But for me, it does not take much to join the fun. Let the Rhythm guide.

Sometimes the 'crowd' that you join may not like - they might want to keep within themselves. Too bad if they dont like, you always have option to take it somewhere else.

I am all for Celebrating Indoor or Outdoor.
Indoor has clean up problems while outdoor you can access Only Face. So your options are very limited. :D

When I come to think of it ... Holi & Diwali is not just one day festival. I know Holi used to arrive around a month before.

But lets not kill our plan because of that. Wear your thinking cap and start coming up with Ideas.

How abt. changing the calender (esp. for Holi) as per weather/other conditions here like weekend etc; As in India Holi is celebrated during early(begining) of Summer, similarly it can be done here. And once we all(including concern authorities) come up with a date thru calculation and consensus is made- won't it be good? So much for the Holi Quoting Harivansh Rai Bachhan- Ek baras me ek baar hi jagti Holi ki jwala, ek baar hi lagti baji -Jalti deepon ki maala. Dunianwalon kintu kisi din aa Madiraylay me dekho- aa madiralay me dekho, Din ko Holi raat Diwali roz manati Madhushala!!!!

If I may've offended someone (bura na maano holi hai).

All the South Indian festivals and religious occasions are celebrated in GTA. This is done with such rigour and festivity, I have not seen this in South India. The dates are as per the Panchang based on the Canadian time zone. The pundits are also so religious and follow the old vedic methods and also recite the mantras very correctly unlike some pundits in Tamil Nadu, who has one ear on his mobile, the other ear he is listening to somebody else , while his mouth is reciting something he does not listen. Manytimes they cut short the set methods so that they can move onto the next gig.

Recently for a Shravan(Muruga) pooja, the temple had brought in the elephant from the Toronto Zoo and did all the festivities. Another amazing thing is many of the South Indians do all the festivities in the cold winter with their shirt off at around 11 PM in the open winter like pulling the temple cart of carrying the gods palanquin.I was amazed to see so many young and old doing the upavaas for the Shivrathri in the temple reciting the holy hymns, mantras and slokas while in South India people watch 3 to 4 new releases of movies on their DVD player at home.

I think Hinduism is much safer with the Indian community here in Canada than in South India. This is not my words but that of a political leader called Thirumavazhavan during his recent visit to Toronto.

If somebody wants to enjoy the true Shirdi Sai festivities you should visit the temple near Tomken to understand how religiously and rigourously hinduism is practised here.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
