Hi ,
We shall be moving from Dubai shortly.
I request your advise regarding your experiences (both good and bad) with the freight forwarders from Dubai .
What should one keep in mind whilst negotiating the rates? Should one ask for a door to door Quote or upto a port in Canada? Any other issues we need to know about whilst finalising with the forwarders
Any reccommendations would be welcome
Thanks
AJ

I too immigrated from the Middle east & when we moved we shipped some of our belongings with us.
The reason was that we were not getting a reasonable price for them.
But we regret our decision, the stuff that’s available here is much better & cheaper, its difficult to find those things in ME.
You don’t need to buy any winter clothing they are made according to the weather conditions here.
The major appliance come free with the apartment/house so no need to bring those.
All the electrical equipment is different here because of power & standard.
Even if you do get an transformer 110V->220, it almost the price of getting a new appliance.
All the food processors/microwaves etc. are dirt cheap here.
Once you settle down here, the women will say, they are sick on this old stuff,
so you eventually, will buy new stuff. . . trust me on this.
So my suggestion would be to bring as little as possible! Sell / dump what ever is left.
Bring some nice desi pots & kitchen utensils/stuff as they can easily stay with you & you do need them like immediately.
Once you land get the basic things here.
You will be more mobile this way, believe me its difficult to store & move stuff once you have it. there will be no one to help you too.
Initially you go to a temp place & then to a more permanent place to live.
So you have to move twice.
Still if you plan to ship your stuff, use shipping via water way.
First of all its cheaper, second it will take a some time to reach here,
But that time you would be moved to a permanent place.
Just a suggestion. . .
Thanks

Hi AJM:
Think twice befor you take your stuff from Dubai to Canada. Cost fo cargo, transportation / handling charges in Canada. And overall quality available here. Most probably you are not taking any electrical / electronics goods from Dubai to Canada, except the gadgets with dual volt adapter.
I am moving on 3rd week of Feb.05, and taking nothing except warm clothes and shoes. I did little research about freight forwarding and find it cheaper this way. If you need more info. you can contact me in this number , mobile 050-3583611 (Dubai).

Hi,
I've heard that consolidators like 'FREIGHT SYSTEMS' & FREIGHT WORKS in Dubai offer good deals for moving personal cargo. They also seem to have regular consoles to Canada. Try calling them up- number should be on the biz pages.
Please tell us whether they have competitive rates.
Thnks!
Jellyman,Loveland,Ezrider,New Guy - Thanks for all your replies.
I shall keep the forum posted on my search and experiences for freight forwarding .I agree that it makes no sense to bring along furniture and electrical appliances - I guess we shall be paying nearly the same for forwarding as compared to the cost of purchasing these items there.
Thanks again
AJM
