Yeah most of my BC friends says the same thing only.

>>>>That's right. No one wants to acknowledge that they studied / got jobs due to reservation .

Just a question, does that mean, to meet the reservation criteria not only you have to be a BC but you must get below cut off marks?

>>>>The marks part is BS. There is no cut off. Once u have the caste certificate, u use it to the core and fleece the govt. including financial aids.

Fortunately my kids have stood up to the competition from the reserved category too. Which means that even if they stand double digit in the merit list (30 or 40), the seat may be taken by a candidate deep in the triple digit (say 800 or 900) claiming backwardness.

To overcome this, the candidate in the Open Competition must rank in the top 10. When they come out of this grueling competition in a field tens of 1000s of candidates, there is no sense of achievement as most of them had already become nervous wreck, even a single mistake would send them tumbling down in the merit list. On top of all this they have to bear the insult of their grand parents and great grand parents sinning against the society.

Do not wish a similar situation happening to my grand children. If my children wish to leave abroad to avoid this discrimination, would not stand in their way, though I want to stay here till my death.

Even 100s of years back, the educated always traveled from one kingdom to another, where their knowledge was sought after. Why not now? All the Chandrayaans and Mangalyaans are in safe hands. Let the meritorious leave for greener pastures. But when it comes to their own health and medical treatment, our politicians do not hesitate to travel to New York or Boston, than trust the doctors and hospitals in India.

What is ridiculous is that the reservation is carried over. For ex. the dad got his seat in school/college thru reservation and the job also. His son/daughter will get admission thru reservation also despite the dad could be a upper middle class or rich (assuming that the dad works for the govt and makes tonnes of money thru bribe). He can afford to send the kids to private schools/colleges/universities. NO. They will use the reservation since they are "backward" and their kids also use the same. It goes on without a stop.

There is reservation in promotions in the govt jobs in Karnataka. Don't know in other states. I have my old classmates from engineering who are in the state PWD. Those who are in the general category have so far got only one promotion after nearly 29 yrs of service whereas those in the reservation category already got 3-4 promotions.

Congress is also pushing for reservation in promotions as they have announced in their manifesto.

The reservation as it is being practiced now needs to be reviewed. It is just not a question of education and employment in government.

There is no withdrawal of reservation for the creamy layer For example if both father and mother of a child are medical doctors in government hospital in city, their one and only child, even though living in a metropolis and studying in the best school in the city can still enjoy benefits of reservation. He does not sacrifice his seat for the less fortunate in the same reserved category, living in rural, his parents illiterate labor, walk several kms to a government school, but might have scored a few marks less. But he expects the same to be done by a non-reservation candidate undergoing all the hardships mentioned above and scored many marks more than him.

As things stand nearly 98% population come under reservation, under one category or other. This does tell in the work environment where reservation is carried zealously like in government offices. Their employment and promotions are secured by reservation. For getting any work done we have to know somebody in the office or somebody who knows somebody working in that office. Otherwise, even if you go all 365 days of the year to that office, nobody will bother as to why you are waiting there.

Unfortunately, the above stated are the sad truths of living in India. However, in my opinion, living in your own land, in a completely mortgaged free house, and among your family/friends greatly supersede the prevalent corruption. You can always find your way around with the latter.

Further sad part is, you realize it only when you have lived outside India for a longer period of time. For some and the vast majority, it doesn't matter, but someone like me who values the positives of Indian family system always gets a jittery feeling and remains disillusioned by the immigration and the very greener pastures.

Life!

Guys:
You need to see this in a complete unbiased perspective.
Let me narrate it from an unbiased perspective. For argument sake, let us take the sides as OC and BC.
From time immemorial OC's were land owners, temple priests, migrants from a superior culture (read as Persian, Mohanjadara etc..). Let us take BC's as people who were peole working for the OC's in areas such as carpentary, contract labour in fields such as agriculture, manual scavenging, servants etc.., .

Prior to 1947 OC's enjoyed a very favourable advantage. They were in good books with the british, served the british as lawyers, educationists, accountant etc...
After 1947, when the indian constitution came into place, it was decided to lift the BC's so that the country was equal. The BC's were so marginalized that they had to be given mark incentives to lift them up. Remember that Govt. colleges fees were so low that OC's abd BC's could afford it. Similarly, they had to be given reserved seats in the Govt. as their mark when passing out were lower than OC's.

I heard that this practice was supposed to be for one generation only. However, due to lack of computers and due to political agenda, it is being extended indefinitely. Note that this is being done for just 60 years whereas OC's were enjoying life for generations.

I am aware that some OC's became poor in the meantime. Though I have pity for them, as an unbiased person, I will not blame the system. The same system that once marginalized the BC's has now marginalized the OC's.

I am sure that the system will change soon. People are now looking for more and more educated people to come to power (Like AAP). Computers are slowly being brought into every field which will of course lead to curb of corrupt practices. Cards like Aadhar hold your bio metric information and can be used one day to end this practice etc...

I have several OC's friends in my FB account who openly post that the practice of reservation is wrong. Now that is what I call sour grapes. Would that same OC person acknowledge that his ancestors (prior to 1947) enjoyed for centuries fruits of BC oppression? They would not think that way. Even OC Cd's will not accept this. That is short sightedness.

Now I have some good news for OC's. India is now changed. Govt. jobs are no longer the best paying jobs (though the least work has to be done in those jobs). Private sector jobs where merit and individual skill rules are the jobs of today. I agree that OC children now will have to work very hard to go for Govt. colleges but still they have lot of provate colleges to choose from. Fees are more but even now Govt. college fees are only 50-75% less (compared to 98% less in our times) than private college jobs. Universities like SRM, Sathyabama etc even have foreign exchange programmes where you go spend some semesters abroad. Land prices have increased. OC's owning anscestaral land are now crore pathi's. Most can afford education in Australia which they do now. Many banks are offering educational loans based on mortgage of your land. Students take the loan, study , earn and then pay back. OC's are very well accepted in the Gulf when if they do BA, B Com, MBA etc...

Some OC's can start a fund to help poor OC's. Why should you trust a govt. where the politicians want to offer facilities for BC's to gain their vote. When the dravidian moment was in vouge in TN, Educational institutions like Periyar Maniyammai Institution, Annamalai university, Alagappa university came to promote people from their caste, Dravidians. Christian and Muslim minority institutions were started to promote people of that religion. Why not OC's brand , pool their money and take their caste forward.

Hope this helps and seals the lips of OC's.

Murali
