Dear CDs

I am in US for a week and was wondering if buying a Dell streak 7 (launched Feb 2011) will be worth taking a look ?

There are two issues to these products.

One is Hardware and another Software.

I recently bought a samsung captivate smart phone. The hardware is sleek and with lots of benefits.

I have android v2.1 installed and its nearly 10 days I'm trying to upgrade to v 2.2 with the help of rogers tech support to no success.

Either the samsung server is down or too slow. While I've never had any trouble in Apple server upgrades on my itouch.

But when it comes to software, upgradation and applications NOTHING compares to Apple.

I would strongly suggest ignore these products and go for an IPAD 2.

Steve Jobs appears on stage at Apple iPad2 event

Apple CEO Steve Jobs briefly emerged from his medical leave and walked on stage to standing ovation Wednesday to unveil the second-generation of the popular iPad, which will go on sale March 11 in the U.S.

Mr. Jobs looked frail and wore his signature black mock turtleneck, blue jeans and wire-rimmed glasses.

“We’ve been working on this product for a while, and I just didn’t want to miss today,” Mr. Jobs said at the San Francisco event. “Thank you for having me.”

The next-generation tablet computer has a faster processor than the original iPad’s. As expected, it comes with two cameras for taking photos and video chatting. The battery life will be the same as the original -- about 10 hours of “on” time and a month on standby.

The iPad 2 is also thinner -- 8.8 millimeters instead of the current 13.4 millimeters.

"The new iPad 2 is actually thinner than your iPhone 4,” Jobs said.

The new iPads will cost the same as the originals {hbox}” $499 to $829, depending on storage space and whether or not they can connect to the Internet over a cellular network. In the U.S., the iPad 2 will work on AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless.

After its March 11 U.S. launch, the iPad 2 goes on sale March 25 in at least 26 other countries, including Mexico, New Zealand and ones in Europe.

Jobs announced in January that he would take a third leave of absence to focus on his health. In the last decade, Jobs, 56, has survived a rare but curable form of pancreatic cancer and undergone a liver transplant.

Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook has been running day—to—day operations.

In 2009, Jobs said in advance that he would take a six—month medical leave; this time, the company did not specify when he would return. The last time Steve Jobs went on medical leave, marketing chief Phil Schiller was the main presenter at product launch events.

I'll support Apple's industrial engineering, but apple's OS is closed source and is not flexible. The best combination that exists is Apple h/w and an open source OS like linux (I'm a huge fan of linux and have installed it on a mac and on a thinkpad - the mac linux is way way better).

I personally use Android 2.2 on the HTC DEsire and suggest your go for it over the Ipad. The flexibility of droid, the ability to adapt the OS to your requirements and the # of apps (compare the # of apps on market and apple) makes droid a strong strong preference.

Thanks Vandematram and newboyo ,

I am yet to buy anything , but this input will come handy.
Though buying ipad2 is very tempting but i was looking for one device which is handy enough for internet, gps, camera, video recorder, for watching videos, photos, vid chat, storage device, book reader, document editor, music player even act as phone, easy to carry and can fit into my coat pockets while on move. Apart from these ergonomic feature also should be stable, upgradable & good with performance particularily in wi fi if i have good service provider. I am sure i am not asking for too much in present times. I am carrying atleast 4 electronic devices of various sizes and a large size laptop carry bag currently to avail these luxaries.

Ipad loose out on size for me even if I accept the higher cost it being stable apple plus it cannot be placed in car as gps.

looks like waiting for some more time can be another option :-)

7 things missing in ipad 2:

1.It was widely speculated that iPad 2 may sport a bigger screen size than iPad. However, the second-generation iPad retains its predecessor's screen size with 9.7-inch LED-backlit display. Also, it was widely believed that iPad 2 will get a high-resolution Retina Display, similar to the one in iPhone 4. However, Apple disappointed many on this too.

Retina Display is the name given by Apple to the high-resolution screen technology introduced on the iPhone 4 in June 2010. By increasing the number of pixels on screen, Retina Display offers 326 pixels per inch, which Apple claims is the same as the human eye and makes it impossible to distinguish individual pixels, leading to a much-higher definition image on the screen

2.The new iPad comes sans SD card slot and USB port. Expectations were high that Apple may add an SD slot to the device and give users choice to pad up storage.

However, this should not be a surprise considering that Apple added SD slot to MacBooks years after the industry had made it a standard feature in PCs. Internet media was also abuzz with reports that iPad 2 will come with a USB port.

3.Another missing feature in the new iPad is NFC support. NFC is a technology that allows mobile users to use their devices as a digital wallet. The technology enables users to pay for retail goods or services such as transit rides by waving their handsets across a reader.

Earlier this year, reports emerged that Apple was working to bring the NFC technology to the next generation of the iPhone and iPad.

4.After Apple and Intel collaborated to bring the Intel-developed Thunderbolt technology on Apple's new line of MacBook Pro laptop computers, speculations ran high that the new iPad too may come bundled with the technology.

Intel recently announced the availability of Thunderbolt technology, a new high-speed PC connection technology that brings together high-speed data transfer and high-definition (HD) display on to a single cable. Running at 10Gbps, Thunderbolt technology can transfer a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds.

5.It is still unclear whether Apple has made RAM upgrade to its second-generation iPad. While few analysts claim that the company has boosted its RAM to 512MB, however, Apple website and press release doesn't mention it.

With enhanced features like multitasking, wireless streaming of photos and music etc making its way in iPad with iOS 4.2 release, enhanced memory was top on iPad 2 wishlist. This is despite the fact that iPad's competitors including Motorola Xoom, HP TouchPad and BlackBerry PlayBook boast of over 1GB RAM.

6.Finally the iPad 2 features both front-and rear-facing video cameras to enable video chat. According to Apple, the camera will record video, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio and still camera with 5x digital zoom.

However, Apple website does not mention how many megapixels iPad 2 cameras have. According to Web reports, rear-facing camera on the iPad 2 is mere 1 megapixel in comparison to Motorola Xoom's 5 megapixels. Even RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook sports a 5 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording capacity. Also, iPad 2's front-facing camera is just VGA quality
