Hi friends,
This is my experience when I landed on 30th July 2006.
I had a DELL laptop, originally bought from USA few months ago. The customs people opened it, checked, and confirmed from me that it was brand new and bought from USA. I gave correct information about its source and value. The person went inside his office, checked the DELL website and returned. He said, you need to pay a one time tax for this laptop brought inside canada.
He applied a tax of CAD 49.5 for his calculated value of $825 on the laptop. I paid it at the counter using my Indian Credit Card (VISA). He said, it is one time payment during life time, now you can move this laptop any time in and out of Canada.
Please take note of this informatoin in case you bring high value electronics. I donot fully know the criteria. You may check relevant websites. He did not charge anything on the $150 bose headset. Probably, due to the tax on laptop.
thanks,
Any thing (reasonable item) you bring into Canada when you land for the first time is duty free. You are not supposed to be paying customs duty on your laptop.

we are moving soon and planning to buy a laptop from Dubai.
Is it better to buy Laptop in Dubai or Canada, considering the voltage systems are different.
Also which laptop will be best in the price range of 1000$?
In my personal experience, DELL laptop gives you best multimedia experience and
excellent overall usage experience along with sturdy feeling of construction.
I use a DELL Inspiron 6000 laptop, make 2006.
I have used HP, Compaq and Toshiba models, I feel I am satisfied with DELL.
I keep hearing that competitors have bettered their models to aggressively compete against DELL. Checkout HP models once.
Rajuyathi,
Was this your 1st landing or subsequent. Would be interested in knowing, since (as TD has mentioned), there is no tax at the time of 1st landing.

Thanks for your message. Yes, I realized later that it was technically my second landing. I landed for just 2 days in Sept 2005, as I was in USA for some time.
Looks like this answers the tax problem.
