Hello friends,

This forum makes an interesting reading and I thought I will share some of my experiences and ideas with others.

I am basically an accounting professional, having worked in India and middle east before moving to Canada in 2001. I was fortunate enough to land in a permanent job with a one of the major food processing companies within a month of landing in Canada( still wondering why I came here, could not find an answer), didnt like it much(they were racists!!!), moved after three months to an engineering company, after spending almost two years with them, moved again and I am currently working for a Japanese office equipment manufacturer in a financialnalysis role. Right now, I am almost comfortable here, have a small place on my own to live, a car, a CMA designation etc. I hope to do an MBA in a couple of years, still not sure, whether it is really worth it or not.

I think the major factor that worked for me was the way in which I presented my profile. Before moving to Canada, I used to scan the job postings in internet(workopolis, monster) for accounting positions almost every day for around three months and look for the key wording in them. When I was ready to make my resume in the so called canadian style( a format is easily available at Monster.com resume centre), I had a huge list of the responsibilites worded in the canadian way to put and this did wonders to me. I prepared for the interviews by watching CNN everyday and tried to imitate the accent. Again, this too worked for me. Another major factor should be my age, I was 29 when I came to Canada. The older you are the more difficult it is to get in to the work force. That is my observation. I dont know whether this will work for others, but, of course, this worked for me.

hi gaon ki gori,

i checked monster.com and it was indeed full of useful ideas about making your resume a \"canadian\" one. i am planning to adapt some of the ideas there. thanks a ton for that info.

i hope that you inspire more of the negative thinkers out there that indeed, \"if there's a will, there's a way.\" :)

Indian girl,

Unfortunately, I am still a negative thinker because I know the inside story now.

i came to canada 4 and half years back. i am a s/w professional. initially when i came, every where i go, they were asking for canadian experience. i contacted all those placement consultants. i sent them so many resumes, made many changes to my resume according to their suggestion. so, almost 6 months passed before i could get a job.

in the mean-time i started teaching java, web development to some friends here. due to this, my job searching took a back seat also.

after those bad experiences with consultants, i started applying directly to the clients. i got my first call for client interview in feb 2000 from a client direct and i was selected!

this really made me think.. i am very confident about my skills, client has no problem with my no-canadian (or north american) experience. why these consultants are after that? may be some clients insist on NA experience. but not all.

after that i never looked back. i did change jobs. but never was jobless or never thought of taking up another job or never did i face any discrimination because i am an asian

i mean, i cant speak english like the people here.. i am not ashamed of it. i try but i dont imitate.. i never had to! all my employers behaved with respect because i am from india. they have a very high regard for indians.. that too indian in IT field.

still, i am not that happy with this country. i mean, i miss my family. so, planning to go back to india or think about something else in few months.

Hi Sarayu,

Really very good anf encouraging writeup. I am quite impressed with your positive attitude - Lookin at half filled glass rather than half empty. In fact you do had some difficult time in the first six months. But you have nicely cut it down. I hope all other desis giving negative impression should really learn from you.

And gaon_ki_gori,

My admirations for you too, for the positive attitude! Basically all junior desi feels that canadiandesi is depressing because such experiences are not noticed and highlighted properly. Also those who are sharing bad experiences should understand that they should give ideas how they have overcome those difficult time and how anybody can manage. In nut shell, in Canada there is definitley some struggle involved. It is how one handles it. In my opinion the only way is positive attitude.
