hi group

I am at a stage where I am not sure if I wanna continue living in Canada or move to US or back to India. I left India abt 10 years ago and lived in US, Singapore & Canada. The main reason I left India was for monetory reasons. Now that salary levels in India are comparable to Canada or better, I am not sure what I should do.

I was just wondering... what makes people saty back in Canada instead of moving to US or India. May be from your point of view can find somehting that could help me with my dilemma.

Cheers

I don't see the dilemma. According to your post, you have chased the dollar all your life. If the money is good in the US or India ... go! What's stopping you?

In the same token, those that are "staying behind" have their priorities and made their choices.

Trying to understand or adopt someone else's priority will actually cause the dilemma.

What made you leave Singapore and why don't you consider moving back to Singapore if you are finding Canada not so interesting. Having lived in Singapore for about 16 years myself, I would like to know this.

I am planning to move to Singapore if and when I can.

I have faced the same dilemma myself and find it reassuring that I am not the only one.

As human beings exploratory instincts , we try and check out all possible options and then select the best . In India we feel that going abroad is the panacea of all cures . While abroad we long for our home country or lands that we have left behind , in my case the Middle East . There are times when I ask myself (esp when outside ) ...' What am I doing in -25 c when in ME it wouldhave been a pleasent +25 c ?? The answer is ... permanence which I never had @ ME .

I think the answers lie with in and its an evolutionary phase ..... which if though upon deeply and worked upon will result in the best option being chosen with relation to our priorities in life .

India is rising now and will continue to do so bringing an upward change in salaries and life style for sure . In India you have some comforts which are uncommon here eg dosmestic help and cheap available services . On the other hand there s frustrating lawlessness , corruption and system breakdown .

We should enlist all the points / metrics and evaluate them accordingly coming to a decision and act on it . Sometimes we just keep on pending our decisions.

I reread your post & would like to enlist the reasons in favor of Canada :

Better System & Infrastructure
Better environment health wise (less pollution)
Less stess leading to longevity ... this is subjective
Better educated society (accompanied with higher morals )

What if you don't find peace again in India and would want to move out . You may have the door key dhol suhaney syndrome again.

In todays paer i read that you cannot celebrate valentines day. So think about all the nonsense happening in India before you make your decision.

Unfortunately you are the only one who can solve your dilemma. Too many variables involved. e.g: phase of life-single, married, married with kids, older dependents, mindset, adaptability etc etc.
If salary is your only yardstick, your choice would be clear would it not?

I do not want to go back to India because the pace of life, the space, the people and the lifestyle is in keeping with my own priorities and attitude. It did take 11yrs but the choice to make it work was made long before. At the same time, I plan to go occassionaly to pursue business opportunities and preserve links with India. I also do not discount the possibility of going back to settle in India, if i discover during the course of life, that I like it better there. Or maybe it'll be a third or fourth country. Maybe I will not have a choice.

Personally I think there is no perfect choice. Since nothing in life is certain...the information you have to make the choice with today may become redundant tomorrow. Its a gamble either way. So make the choice and make it work :). Whenever you make the choice also make the decision not to look back in regret. If you do try to reverse your decision(for whatever reason) at some point...know that it will be for the better too. That way its a win-win situation.;)

When I first left India for US my driving factor was money. But now my priorities have changed. Now I think I am looking for a good quality of life in a country where there are plenty of opportunities to grow career wise. Singapore was a very good country except that one needs to work for at least 13-14 hrs a day. Other than that, it was a very convenient and progressive country with absolutely best services you can find anywhere in the world. But being a very small country I think I got bored with it and moved out of there. I have been in Canada for abt 2 yrs now and I am still not feeling settled. Not sure why. It could probably be because I had very high expectation of this country and was disappointed a bit. Somehow the feeling that this country fleeces working middle class people out of their hard earned money and continues to do so more and more by the day is deeply ingrained in my mind and that feeling is very unsettling. Not sure if other people feels they same way. Anyways I can ramble on and on….. but I will stop here.

Cheers
