I been a member here for sometime now, and I am amazed at why people decide to leave secure jobs and reasonable lifestyles to immigrate to Canada. I am sure people will flood me with tons of examples. However that is not the point of this discussion.

This century will belong to China and India. Barring any stupid ideological or political revolution in either of those countries, they are on course to be the next economic superpowers of the world. The evidence is everywhere. The middle class (and consumerism) is growing rapidly. The birthrate is dropping. Life expectancy is growing. GDP and other economic indicators are consistently leading the world. While inflation is high, it is also an indicator of super heated growth.

Compare that to Canada, US and Europe, and you will see that the growth is for all intents and purposes stagnant. These nations have "peaked" and as they say "nowhere to go but down". It is evident that the time is approaching when these economies will not be able to sustain the established infrastructures.

In light of this macro-economic facts, why would you want to leave India to come to Canada, US or anywhere else? More importantly, why would you leave a decent job, and forsake a decent lifestyle to come to Canada?

For the simple reason that in spite of all these facts you quote, India will be at most a second world country by 2050. By then most of us on this forum will be dead/senile.

And, in the next few decades, Canada and the US will still very likely be first world countries.

It's the lure of the dollar, I guess.

With the changes in India, I definitely agree with you. There needs a lot to be done but nothing is perfect.

Similarly, there are shortcomings in Canada also.

I guess we realize some things after experiencing it ourselves.

Thanks & regards.

Rajan.

India and China have a long way to go. The per capita GDP is around 2 to 3 Thousand comapred to 20 to 30000 for Canada. So the economy of India has to grow 10 times .Which is not going to happen in the next 100 years.

Plus Indias population is going to double.

So imagine what mess india will be in next 100 years.

The impression I get is that the word 'Foreign' stills holds strong meaning for Indians. It did for me and so many others. I first went to US and while I didnt exactly become an entrepreneur* in the silicon valley, I did pretty well, esp financially.

So no matter what people will IF possible

- go out. The point is where to go and once there what are you ready to do to make it a success. If the choice is limited to just one place , they will even take that.

- follow trends. Human nature.

Given a choice between Canada (a developed economy) and India (a developing / 3rd world economy), people will choose canada. Given a choice between Canada and USA, people will choose USA. If and when there comes a bigger / badder economy than the USA then people will be attracted to those places. Note the countries do not have to be necessary better at all things compared to an immigrants' home. **

If Materially people can do better they will not think about it.

Even now I have a very tough time explaining to relatives that they should not come here and that I am not exactly having fun. The emails I get from my cousins start with 'Aur Masti ho rahi hai' and end with 'Keep rockin' . They still dont believe that I am doing what I am doing. Ok well, be my guest and come here and see for yourself.

The change in India or China is happening but still going to take a while.
As of now there will be continued movement of people out of these overpopulated regions to places like Canada, Australia etc. which have abundant space.

This when Canada has this stringent points system. Imagine if the qualifying points were to be lowered or they changed the meaning of skilled to something more accomodating. There would be a deluge of people.

At present the only person not coming over here is one who cant. (barring exceptions of course)

* success as an entrepreneur there depended on the timing (before/during the IT bubble)
** RIght now with the exchange rate down, people would only go to USA if they get a significatly better deal or if they cannot find a job in Canada.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

The debate about India Vs Canada will continue for many more years. There will be no shortage of Canada bashers, and those who sing praises of India, and about how it will become the biggest superpower, economic power.......... so on and so forth. Then there are those who are ready to bash anyone who will disagree about the great things about India.

I am taking no sides, but these people who sing praises of India......... are they still in India, or have become a desi in Canada? I kind of have a strane feeling about these folks - they sing praises of India over here and when they go there, they call Canada \"the best place to live in\".

Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, perhaps?

Keep Smiling!
