How to introduce yourself to a stranger who may have info abt potential job openings? He/she could be the hiring manager or know someone. Could help in the networking. I am trying to find opening lines.

Would the opening lines be different when the other person is a desi or it universal.

Here is a website that might be able to help:
http://www.careerjournal.com/jobhunting/networking/

I have gone through some of the articles and they offer very sound advice. Have a game plan. Dont ask for a job or job help right away. Networking is a two way street. Offer some help/ request info about the industry.

If you want to be a bit 'faster'. tell them you are interested in the industry that they are working in and you would like to contact them for a possible informational interview to get their take on the industry.

When Canada will get rid of these century old networking thing for Job.
Myself and my wife both consider ourself lucky as we didn't need to go through this networking drudgery to get our Jobs, we worked it through agencies. I personally hate to approach some one purely for the job perspective. Aren't we living in 21st century ? then what all this Internet, Discussion forum, www website mean to.

Very good jobs are dumped on people whose skills do not match at all, but then why, because some body know them well. God, the employer is eventually screwed badly due to this.

Baseless, Useless, Irritating networking.

Networking is human nature. People like to give business to those they know and trust. How do you find your doctor/plumber/accountant/real estate agent? Through referrals right? through friends/family/neighbors that have used them. This is 'word of mouth' and networking. It is business.

You may dislike it, but my experience with my clients that are job searching is that those with stronger networks or networking skills seem to get a lot further.

You cannot at any cost date networking. It is the fundamental building block of society since its inception.

Is that the sad part dear friend? Isn't that the sad part? Its this very notion of an online socity that has spawned online socializing that has handicapped our ability to talk to people like we used to. I am not sure if this is just me but people are less nicer as we go on. There's less interaction on a personal level and more chatting online etc. Isn't that the sad part?

I am with you but not entirely. There are a lot of pros and cons to referrals and you seem to be stressing more on the latter which is not completely false but look at the positive side. Employers offer referral bonus for a reason. In most cases referrals do work and I know this from experience. I have got two jobs because of people I knew and they knew what I was capable and it worked out really well. Sometimes it may not work out but you can't say all able people lose out all the time. I got my present job through hotjobs.ca purely based on merit. I didn't need any referrals. All this to say it works both ways. But in all cases, knowing people never did hurt.

It is NOT baseless. It is NOT useless. But hey, if you find it irritating, that's just too bad! Live with it. It is a part of societal framework. Oh last but not the least, if you think agencies are objective and don't operate under "networking", you are sadly mistaken.

Raj,

Well, there has been a little bit of misunderstanding what I really tried to communicate. There is always a big YES from my side on social networking, personally I've developed a good social network more than what I thought of through toastmaster clubs, meetup groups, local community and a lot of people from different regions of India. I know how how good it is when it isn't established with vested interests as this has been now.

My only point is it irritates if I need to talk to a person something different but my true intention is really a job nothing else. Well, I can provide several cover ups but the core motive is "Personal benefit". I said it is quite irritating but I couldn't say I will avoid it, coz I got to do my living too. It doesn't sound any different than amway.

As far employment is concerned, my point is "Consider someone's skills also instead of just reference". Coz it eventually messes the environment. I've personally suffered in the past and it is the same many might have gone through.

My rants do not really have anything to do with personal networking. Its at last the lifeline of a community / society. I am just against the bias that results as a burden on the skillful, zealous new immigrants who are left alone for years to struggle badly just becoz of this reference.

You're right, it is good in many aspects, it just gets ugly when it comes to the Job scene especially when you're on a side that is affected.
You know MR, While I feel this way it may not be same when it comes to survival, most of us that includes me get to network. You can't always do what you like :)
