Fido is offering good GSM phones and if you sign up for 2 year agreement some of the models will come free.Rogers also offer good GSM phones ...Telus and Bell Mobility doesn't offer any GSM phones.

I have a triband cell from Canada. Is this usable in India too?

Yes, it should be "technically" useable in India.
Just check out if your service provider allows that. I have a European colleague whose service provider has locked his phone to be used in Europe only, and if it is used outside, roaming charges will apply (even with a new local SIM)

I am able to use my Triband phone from India in Toronto without any problem.But when anyone carrys their cell phone from India ,make sure the charger is suitable for Voltages of NA and also carry a connector (suitable to plug your charger on to NA sockets).
