can someone tell me the type of technology used for mobile phones. If it is GSM can I get my mobile from India and use it after buying a SIM card locally in Toronto?

If your cell phone in india supports GSM triband (specifically 1900Mhz), you will be able to use it in North America. If its only dual band, it wont work in NA.

Thank you. I think I was tired from watching the F1 early in the morning ( woke up at 4.30am for the qualifying round ) and did not even think of searching before posting this.

CDMA phones do not have a chip. GSM phones use chips. As mentioned above only tri band phones will work here, but there is some kind of signal problems with phones that are outside of Canada.
Also the local service providers have various schemes when you buy services from them. That turns out to be cheaper. Depending on your needs you might get a phone free for a two year term!!!

Good luck
