Hi friends,
I have been working in US for 2 years on H1
I just got my passport stamped two months back for PR and the expiry date on my VISA is June 2005 but i will planning to travel in Feb 2005.

The Question i had is that after immediately landing in Canada, can i do some groundwork to get started on my residency like
1. Renting a house, opening a bank account, being employed by a Canadian
firm at minimum wages.
while still continue to work in US most of the time.
I can really travel to Canada once a month because i stay in Detroit very close to Windsor and even Toronto.

What is the proof of residency required for Applying for a Canadian Citizenship 3 years down the line ?

Any pointers would be of great help and i can really go in a planned way and not just enter Canada for the sake of it.
Rgds.

It will be difficult to do what you are suggesting. You need to show proof of physical presence in Canada. Simply taking up a Canadian job at minimum wage is not enough. Unlike in the case of maintaining PR where time outside of Canada is counted as time in Canada(as long as you work for a Canadian employer) it does not count for citizenship.

what is in your favor is that you said you are renting a house. I assume you are renting a house in Canada. If so then why not stay in Windsor, instead of saying that you can only come to Canada once a month.

Yellowknife,
Thnks for responding. i live in dearborn(near detroit,MI) and i guess windsor is just 15 miles from here and also a part of canada. i can definitely rent a house, get a canada driver license, pay utilities and also if possible try for some arranged employment for name sake but i guess crossing the border daily might become a problem to some extent. (let me know if you know of some sort of a permit which will help me in doing this daily)

i assume that just like US, canada never keeps a record/date of departure as a lot of people cross the border and hence i was just thinking how can it be possible to determine the exact duration of presence in canada. i am just trying to find out what are the different forms of proofs required for applying for citizenship.

would appreciate if you can let me know

With introduction of PR card it might be difficult if you commute daily from Windsor to Detroit because POE officers can easily note the deperture record via swaping the card.
Earlier it was fairly easy with IMM1000 doc because most of the POE officers didn't bother to make a note of deperture record.
Remember with new PR requirement rule CIC is focussing more on actual physical presence and getting Citizenship by showing utility bill etc will be very very difficult.

Above all it is fraud, unfair and should be discouraged. If you can't live for atleast three years in Canada, why are you even bothering to get Citizenship. Get US Citizenship and you will have what u are trying to achieve by getting Canadian Citizeshsip. But anyway it's ur life and ur decision

I agree with Sirsa.

Don't try to dupe the Canadian govt. or somewhere down the line, you may pay a pertty hefty price for it. Don't forget, misinforming the govt. on application forms is a criminal offense and even if you do get citizenship using this route (highly unlikely), it can be revoked any time in the future if the govt. finds out.

Are you there?
