Do you know if I need to bring my Indian passport to the Consulate when visiting there for Indian visa? I am not OCI or PIO holder thus far.

Please advise.
Thanks.

Thanks cdn_dude, that's all I want to know. Yes, this is the first time I am visiting India after getting my Cdn. passport.

Thanks.

Will they ask for the fee to deposit to get surrender certificate before they issue visa?

Based on current info on consulate websites, it appears they will require you to get a surrender certificate before they will issue visa for the first time (especially, in the case of febpreet as for that person, it's the first time).

Baba, koi yeh samjao mujhe !!!

Under what other circumstances would you have a cancelled stamp on your Indian passport other than acquiring a foreign citizenship ?

This is written in typical "Sarkari" language. My guess is it means if your old Indian passport has just "Cancelled" stamp then you need to get Surrender Certificate. If it was stamped with reason stating that "Cancelled due to acqusition of foreign nationality" then you do not need to get Surrender Certificate.

Dimple,

Have you seen Surrender Certificate mentioned anywhere in Indian consulate's website in Canada or VFS's website in Canada?

No, the closest I've read was on Chicago consulate's website.

Welcome to Canada !
It is a no brainer. I got this from the FAQ of the Chicago Indian consulate website
I have already obtained an Indian visa/PIO/OCI card. Do I still need to obtain the Surrender Certificate?
Yes, you need to obtain the Surrender Certificate. If you have an emergency travel to India coming up and hold valid visa/PIO/OCI, you may travel as of now but you should apply for Surrender Certificate at the earliest on your return as that will be required for future services at the Consulate/Embassy. It is advisable to get the surrender certificate immediately.

3. My Indian passport has already been cancelled by an Indian Mission but I was not issued a Surrender Certificate. Do I need to obtain one?

•If you have “Surrender Certificate or Renunciation form” duly attested by the Government of India authorities, then there is no requirement to follow the procedure for renunciation.
•If your passport has a cancelled stamp [and you do not certificate as mentioned in (a) above] then you need to formally renounce your citizenship as per the prescribed format and obtain a Surrender Certificate as a proof of having done so.

We all (on one day) have to pay the fees for the surrender certificate. It is inevitable. I guess what the Indian Govt. (for Canada) is planning that it would start the fee collection on July 1 st so that our HST rebate cheques can be used to avail this service and we still would have to pay the 8 % increase in taxes to the Cdn. govt. (for selected services).
So India and Canada are going hand in hand to make sure that we spend our income wisely.

Peace by TK
