No qualms in saying that I believe in God and prayers and the latter has helped in providing a life much better than what I would have had if all of my prayer wishes had been granted.(anyway most of them have not been granted). For prayers to connect with God, they have to be incessant. An isolated vote did not bring down UPA or bring in BJP, but a whole lot of them. Similarly, prayers through time, from seconds to years have an accelerating effect. It does provide a better quality of life, which is what most of us ask of God, though there are far greater things.
In Kamal Hassan's Anbey Sivam, there are some interesting dialogues between him and Madhavan regarding the concept of God. Kamal too would not stop going to a medical doctor or stop taking medical treatment, just because the doctor belongs to some faith. Kamal's own personal and professional life reminds us of Lord Subramanya rushing through the pathway round the earth, while his contemporary Rajni just like Lord Ganesha took a pradakshina of his parents and receive the fruit of success from them.

No God is responsible for one's quality of life. It's basically the cause and effect from the tangible 'Karmas'. Any invisible entity can't be held responsible of one's success/failures, and what one gains and loses in life.
Just your own steps and the timing of which that yield the results accordingly. Even if I believe in God, he/she doesn't have any say whatsoever in how an individual or this World is governed. May be, by meditating towards this invisible power they call 'God', I get some peace of mind and concentration to do my job and lead my life well, but praying to Him/Her in order to take care of my business entirely is an utter foolishness, in my opinion.
It's a simple philosophy, but still couldn't get into the heads of millions of people that waste their time by constantly asking from and bribing (in the form of throwing money at the glorified temples, etc.) someone that has nothing to do with how they behave/run their very lives.

What my government does usually defies logic. It denies seat for youth who scores 98%, but would take a student who is hardly interested in scoring 60% in their arms and into higher seat of learning. Similarly, in jobs and promotions. If questioned they would not accept it is vote bank politics but would dish out some 5000 years (his)story where a man hardly lives for 70 years.
We may not require prayers to tie our shoe laces, but definitely when logic and government of the day goes against us. Otherwise we may end up as extremists.

Meghal, extend that thought further. If by praying one can get things, why would a poor just ask for basic things? Everyone, including us, will start asking for wealth that is equal to Bill Gates. It is not like that. It is wrong to thinks that just by praying to god the poverty will go away. One has do his/her own karma to get things. The result can follow, but it is not in one's hand. It may or may not come.
Prayers helps make one stronger and optimistic. In the difficult times, it helps to stay clam and god's proximity (or sense of) provides courage to pass the difficult times. During good times, though most people forget god, those remember him/her, makes them humble.
It is all experiment on our Mind. One can get joy by watching football game and thus remain fresh, or one can drink and remain fresh, the same way if one can get fresh by going to temple/mandir/church and remain fresh, it is understandable.
